Job summary

The Onset Group is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help rebuild the core technology platform for a leading Australian Fintech. You will own architecture decisions, modernise a complex platform and work with senior engineering leaders to shape the next generation of the backend stack.

You will design scalable services with Node.js, TypeScript and AWS, mentor engineers, and drive the technical direction across lending, credit and payments in a pivotal technology transformation.

Qualifications

• Senior backend engineer with hands-on experience.

Help rebuild the core technology platform of an established Australian Fintech.

We’re partnering with an established Australian Fintech that’s investing heavily in its engineering capability and undertaking a major technology transformation.

With an impressive new technology leadership team bringing experience from some of Australia’s leading technology companies and high-growth scale-ups, they’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help shape the next generation of their platform.

This is an opportunity to join at a point where significant architectural decisions are still being made, with genuine ownership over how the technology evolves.

The Opportunity

You will be one of the most senior hands-on engineers in the business, working closely with engineering leadership to build new backend systems and progressively modernise a complex existing platform.

The focus is on building scalable, reliable systems across lending, credit and payments, while helping establish a stronger internal engineering function.

What you’ll be doing:

• Designing and building backend services using Node.js, TypeScript and AWS.
• Architecting scalable distributed systems, APIs and event-driven services.
• Modernising legacy applications and integrating new systems with existing infrastructure.
• Driving technical decisions around architecture, scalability, reliability and performance.
• Establishing engineering standards, best practices and development processes.
• Remaining hands-on while mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across the business.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong commercial experience with Node.js and TypeScript, particularly backend engineering.
• Deep hands-on experience with AWS and designing cloud-native applications.
• Experience building complex distributed systems, microservices and event-driven architectures.
• Strong understanding of API design, integrations, system performance and reliability.
• Experience modernising legacy platforms or delivering significant technology transformations.
• Proven experience operating at Staff, Principal or hands-on Technical Lead level.
• Excellent communication skills, technical judgement and the ability to work through ambiguous problems.

Experience in Fintech, payments, lending or banking would be highly regarded, but isn’t essential.

Location

Sydney CBD - five days in the office during probation, moving to four days afterwards.
