Job summary

CommBank is hiring multiple Staff Software Engineers in Payments Technology. You will provide technical leadership across squads, shaping architecture and driving modern, secure, scalable platforms for Australia’s largest bank.

You’ll mentor engineers, partner with product and security teams, and forward AI-enabled engineering practices while delivering reliable payment experiences at scale.

We're growing our Payments Engineering teams and are hiring multiple Staff Software Engineers across several high-impact technology streams. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll provide technical leadership, influence engineering strategy across squads, mentor engineers, and help build resilient, scalable platforms that power Australia's largest bank.

Payments Data Services

The Payments Data Crew designs and delivers modern data products, APIs and platforms that power payment experiences across the bank. We provide trusted, high-quality payments data through scalable engineering solutions, enabling better customer outcomes, operational excellence and data-driven decision making.

What you'll do

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will:

• Provide technical leadership across squads, setting engineering direction and raising technical standards.
• Design, build and evolve secure, scalable and resilient software platforms.
• Lead architecture and design decisions for complex distributed systems.
• Drive modernisation initiatives using cloud-native and event-driven architectures.
• Champion engineering excellence across software quality, testing, observability, security and operational excellence.
• Foster a strong DevSecOps culture by owning solutions end-to-end, from design and development through to deployment, production operations and continuous improvement.
• Mentor engineers and help grow technical capability across teams.
• Partner closely with Product, Architecture, Security and Operations to deliver meaningful customer outcomes.
• Drive adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices, reusable platform capabilities and modern software delivery techniques where appropriate.

What we're looking for

We're looking for experienced software engineers who enjoy solving difficult technical problems and influencing engineering beyond their immediate team.

You don't need experience across every technology we use. We're interested in engineers who bring deep expertise in several areas and are excited to learn the rest.

Software Engineering

Experience with several of the following:

• Node.js and TypeScript for backend development
• Building APIs, microservices and distributed applications
• Designing scalable, high-performance backend systems

Cloud & Platform Engineering

Experience with cloud-native engineering and platform technologies such as:

• AWS (including services such as EKS, ECS, Lambda, Aurora PostgreSQL, S3 and CloudWatch)
• Kubernetes and containerised applications
• Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormation
• CI/CD and modern software delivery practices
• Building observable, resilient production systems

Architecture & Distributed Systems

Experience designing and operating modern software platforms including:

• Event-driven architectures
• Kafka or similar messaging platforms
• Microservices and distributed systems
• API-first design
• Scalability, resilience and performance optimisation

Technical Leadership

You'll ideally bring experience in:

• Leading technical direction across multiple teams or initiatives
• Architecture and solution design
• Coaching and mentoring engineers
• Driving engineering standards, quality and best practices
• Taking ownership of software across its full lifecycle with a DevSecOps mindset
• Collaborating effectively across engineering, product and architecture teams

Experience that will help you succeed

While many of our engineers come from payments or financial services, we're equally interested in engineers from other large-scale, complex technology environments.

Experience in one or more of the following will help you succeed:

• Building high-availability, mission-critical platforms
• Developing software in regulated or security-sensitive environments
• Modernising legacy applications and platforms
