Job description

About the job

We are looking for a committed engineer to join Finstro as we build a new Credit Decisioning Engine and the pipeline that runs our internal credit workflow. You’ll be part of a small engineering team building the platform and owning it long term, working closely with our Principal Engineer and Head of Engineering.

This is a delivery role with real ownership. You’ll take a significant part of the system whether that’s a set of data source integrations, the services behind credit operations, or the APIs other teams build on and own it from design through to production and the support that follows.

Architecture and standards are set with the Principal Engineer and Head of Engineering. Within that, how your part works is yours to own.

The team is small and new, so the work won’t sit neatly inside one boundary. Expect to work across backend services most of the time, with internal tooling and front-end work when that’s what moves the project forward.

The Credit Decisioning Engine is the first project to build. Credit workflow tooling, core lending and ledger integration, and the data services behind risk and reporting will follow. You can expect to work across several of these areas in your first two years.

About Finstro

Finstro is a fast-growing non-bank lender, providing businesses with cash flow, flexibility and confidence every step of the way. We go beyond rigid product silos and understand speed is only a part of the answer.

Since 2012, we’ve supported the growth aspirations of over 6,000 businesses through over $2.5b of funded transactions.

If you have energy, ambition and want to work for a dynamic, rapid growth, FinTech business, there are exciting opportunities to advance your career by joining our global team..

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build and own services. Take a problem from a rough shape through to something in production that other engineers can work on without asking you first. Within a year you are shipping independently, and colleagues route questions about your part of the platform to you.

  • Integrate external and internal systems. Credit bureaus, banking and open banking feeds, accounting platforms, identity and fraud providers, and Finstro's own lending and ledger systems. Your integrations degrade sensibly when a provider is slow or wrong, and that behaviour is documented and tested.

  • Instrument and run what you build. Observability is designed with the feature, not added after the first incident, and you share the on-call load for your services. You find problems before Credit or Operations report them, and your alerts are trusted rather than muted.

  • Quality and safe release. Automated testing that gives real confidence, clear contracts between services, releases that can be safely deployed. In a credit system, a wrong answer is more expensive than a slow one, so correctness comes first.

  • Work with Credit and Operations. Understand the credit process well enough to catch a requirement that will not survive contact with production and raise it early. Explain constraints in language a non-technical colleague can act on.

  • Contribute to how the team works. Review code with care, keep documentation honest, help set the standards we hold each other to. Ability to mentor more junior engineers as we build out the team.

Experience and Skills Required:
  • Around 5+ years of experience building and running backend services in production, with real depth in at least one modern language. We are likely to work in Java, Go, or TypeScript with Node; the choice is still being made, and we will talk to strong engineers from other backgrounds who can pick these up.

  • Practical experience on AWS cloud: deploying, configuring and operating services, managed data stores, infrastructure as code and CI/CD, and understanding the cost of what you run.

  • Designing and consuming APIs, including third-party providers whose reliability and data quality you do not control, and relational data modelling and SQL that holds up under load and under change.

  • Automated testing as a habit, including tests that give confidence about integrations rather than only about units, and releasing frequently and safely.

  • Instrumenting and supporting your own services in production: logs, metrics, tracing, alerting and incident diagnosis.

  • Clear written and verbal communication, and the confidence to raise a problem early.

  • Effective use of AI coding tools, with a clear view of where their output can and cannot be trusted.

What we offer:
  • Competitive compensation package including superannuation and benefits.

  • Opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies in a dynamic and innovative environment.

  • Collaborative and supportive team culture.

This role is based onsite in Sydney, Australia. Candidates must be in and authorised to work in Australia.
