Job summary

Heaton Rail in Western Sydney is seeking a Software Engineer – PLC & Control Systems to design, develop, test and maintain control software for complex electromechanical systems, with a strong emphasis on PLC programming.

The role includes system analysis, verification and FAT/site testing, plus cross-team collaboration with international engineering groups; rail or safety-critical experience is highly valued.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, or related discipline.
• Hands-on PLC programming and industrial control systems experience.
• Experience with IEC 61131 languages such as Structured Text, FBD, and SFC.
• Experience designing and testing control software for electromechanical equipment.
• Experience with requirements analysis, software design, testing, and root cause analysis.
• Rail, HVAC, manufacturing or safety-critical environments are advantageous.
• Experience with EN 50128/EN 50657, ISaGRAF, C/C++, RTOS or cybersecurity considerations is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and implement PLC software and control algorithms for industrial electromechanical systems.
• Undertake system functional analysis and develop traceable software requirements and specifications.
• Perform software and system verification and validation, including FAT and site testing.
• Troubleshoot PLC, software and equipment faults, undertake root cause analysis and support ongoing software maintenance.
• Support software documentation, configuration management, defect tracking and continuous improvement activities with cross-border teams.

Job description

We’re currently recruiting for a Software Engineer – PLC & Control Systems to join a global engineering and manufacturing organisation specialising in rail vehicle HVAC and thermal management systems.

This is a full-time, permanent position based in Western Sydney. The role is focused on the design, development, testing and maintenance of control software for complex electromechanical systems, with a strong emphasis on PLC programming and industrial control systems.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Design, develop and implement PLC software and control algorithms for industrial electromechanical systems.
• Undertake system functional analysis and develop traceable software requirements and specifications.
• Perform software and system verification and validation, including bench testing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and site testing.
• Troubleshoot PLC, software and equipment faults, undertake root cause analysis and support ongoing software maintenance.
• Support software documentation, configuration management, defect tracking and continuous improvement activities while working across local and international engineering teams.

Skills and Requirements

• Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Hands-on experience in PLC programming and industrial control systems.
• Experience with IEC 61131 programming languages such as Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams and/or Sequential Function Charts.
• Experience developing and testing control software for electromechanical equipment or industrial systems.
• Experience across requirements analysis, software design, testing, validation, troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
• Experience within rail, HVAC, automotive, manufacturing or other safety-critical engineering environments would be highly regarded.
• Experience with EN 50128 / EN 50657, ISaGRAF, C/C++, real-time operating systems or cybersecurity considerations would be advantageous.
