Job Description

The consortium of John Holland, Bouygues Construction, Arcadis Australia, Jacobs and Ventia has been selected to build South Australia's biggest-ever road infrastructure project. In partnership with the South Australian Government, this consortium forms the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Alliance.

The Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Alliance, will deliver the final 10.5km section of the North-South Corridor, forming a continuous 78 km, non-stop, traffic light-free motorway, and contributing to a long-lasting legacy for the community and people of Adelaide.

The T2D Project involves constructing two separate tunnels – the Southern Tunnels and the Northern Tunnels connected by an open motorway, with a combined total distance of 10.5km, open to traffic in 2031. The T2D project comprises the tunnels, surface works including road and bridge construction in addition to services buildings and complex mechanical and electrical infrastructure. The T2D Alliance is committed to providing opportunities for local people, Aboriginal workers, apprentices, trainees and job seekers who are long-term unemployed and offers people an incredible opportunity to be a part of an iconic project.

The Role

The Shift Engineer role will work on a 7/3/7/4 day & night shift roster and provide direct engineering and technical support to tunnel supervisors and the workforce to ensure continuous tunnel excavation and safe operations. The role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and monitoring tunnelling activities in compliance with project engineering, safety, quality, and environmental procedures. The Shift Engineer will contribute to efficient tunnelling delivery by overseeing plant, material, and labour resources during rostered shifts.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and report progress, quality, and safety through site inspections, documentation reviews, and incident/non-conformance management
  • Coordinate daily site activities in the tunnel, this may include attending meetings, inspections, and planning sessions to ensure smooth tunnel operations and compliance with permits and approvals
  • Prepare and maintain construction documentation including method statements, ITPs, SWMS, site plans, and accurate project records aligned with quality, safety, and environmental systems
  • Manage resources and logistics by tracking costs for plant, labour, and materials, supporting procurement, and resolving site issues in collaboration with senior staff
  • When rostered on TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) shifts, monitor and communicate tunnelling parameters and alignment, select key positions, track ring building, record defects and conduct operational audits
  • Foster strong working relationships with supervisors, subcontractors, and stakeholders to maintain a collaborative environment
About You
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Civil, Mining, Geotechnical, or equivalent)
  • Preferably 2 years of experience in a site-based engineering role
  • Ability to work on a 7/3/7/4 roster including nights and weekends
  • Open to be involved in hyperbaric works
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety, quality, and environmental requirements
  • Experience working on mega-construction or tunnelling projects is desirable
  • Demonstrated ambition and a willingness to learn, with an ability to apply new skills, academic and practical knowledge in a dynamic construction environment.
