Byron Shire Council in Byron Bay is seeking a Sewer Supervisor (Maintenance) to oversee sewer network maintenance, lead a small to medium team and ensure safety, regulatory compliance and efficient operations. The position is based at the Byron Bay depot and STP, with relocation assistance possible and a focus on asset integrity and service delivery to the community.

Qualifications

  • Grade 4: Year 12 certificate and Water Industry ops cert or equivalent.
  • Grade 4: Class C Driver's Licence and White Card.
  • Grade 4: Immunisation cert as required.
  • Grade 6: Plumber & Drainer trade with 2+ years post-trade exp or equivalent.
  • Grade 6: Budgeting, works programming and team development.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule and coordinate sewer maintenance including inspections, cleaning and repairs.
  • Lead day-to-day operations to ensure safety, on-time delivery within budget.
  • Inspect assets, assess priorities and implement maintenance solutions.
  • Oversee safe operation of plant, equipment and tools.
  • Maintain records using asset management systems.
  • Deliver maintenance across gravity, vacuum and low-pressure sewer networks.
  • Coordinate overflow response and environmental sampling.

About The Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Sewer Supervisor (Maintenance) to join our Utilities team.

In this role you will oversee and coordinate the maintenance and repair activities of the sewer network within the Utilities branch, leading a team, scheduling work assignments, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental requirements, and managing equipment, materials and operational resources effectively. Team composition and direct reports may vary depending on operational requirements.

The Sewer Supervisor (Maintenance) plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and functionality of Council's sewer infrastructure, supporting the delivery of essential services while protecting public health and the environment.

This role is dual graded depending on your skills and qualifications; without a trade is considered a Grade 4 and with a trade is a Grade 6 in our salary structure.

Note: This role is based in the Byron Shire of Northern NSW. We are open to considering candidates for relocation, so are extending our search to people based in other metropolitan areas who may be seeking better work-life balance and a lifestyle change. Your Role Will Involve
  • Plan, schedule and coordinate sewer maintenance activities, including inspections, cleaning and repairs.
  • Lead day-to-day operations to ensure work is completed safely, on time and within budget.
  • Inspect and assess sewer assets, identify priorities and implement maintenance solutions.
  • Oversee the safe operation and maintenance of specialised plant, equipment and tools.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records using asset management and maintenance systems.
  • Deliver maintenance projects across gravity, vacuum and low-pressure sewer networks, including rising mains.
  • Coordinate sewer overflow response, environmental sampling and other operational activities.
  • Contribute to maintenance planning and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance asset performance.
  • Read and interpret plans, drawings and technical specifications, and utilise digital systems for reporting and asset management.
  • Manage budgets and expenditure in accordance with financial delegations.
What You Bring To This Role
Grade 4
  • Year 12 Certificate.
  • Certificate III in Water Industry Operations or similar, or equivalent experience in a comparable role.
  • Class C Driver's Licence.
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card).
  • Immunisation certification appropriate to the nature of works to be undertaken.
  • Proven success in sewer maintenance or similar role.
  • Leadership and coordination of small to medium-sized teams.
  • Experience in construction and maintenance industries.
  • Experience operating minor/major plant equipment.
Grade 6
All Of The Above And
  • Trade Qualification Plumber and Drainer with a min of 2 years post-trade experience (4+ years preferred) or equivalent.
  • Managing budgets and delegations.
  • Development of and/or contribution to works programming.
  • Performance management of team and team development, e.g. training, skills development, performance reviews.
  • Coordination and liaison with internal stakeholders, contractors, and external agencies.
We are offering
  • Full time permanent position (38 hours per week / 9 day fortnight)
  • Salary and Conditions will be in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award with an appointment at a salary in the range of:
    • Grade 4: $1,237.66 to $1,434.02 plus a 3% Market Loading
    • Grade 6: $1,403.59 to $1,626.28 plus a 7% Market Loading
    • Per 38 hour week (dependent upon skills and experience)

Location

This position is based at our Depot and (STP) Sewerage Treatment Plant in Byron Bay; however, Council can require you to work from other work sites as required for operational reasons.
