Job summary

The Government client (agency undisclosed) is seeking a Senior WHS Advisor to provide expert advice across a complex organisation, guiding leaders, employees and volunteers to strengthen safety culture and WHS systems. You will develop, implement and continuously improve WHS policies, procedures and programs while building safety capability and ownership.

You will monitor hazards and incidents, conduct risk assessments, lead investigations, and report on WHS performance.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and report hazards, incidents, trends and WHS performance data.
  • Provide advice and reporting to WHS committees and governance forums.
  • Undertake incident investigations and support corrective actions.
  • Develop and evaluate internal WHS audit programs and support external audits.
  • Identify system gaps and action plans for improvement.
  • Provide technical advice on WHS legislation and organisational policies.
  • Support risk management activities and hazard controls.
  • Contribute to safety initiatives and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare WHS reports and briefing materials; mentor WHS professionals.

Are you an experienced Work Health and Safety professional looking for an opportunity to make a meaningful impact across a complex and diverse organisation? This is an opportunity to work with leaders, employees, volunteers and external stakeholders to strengthen safety culture, improve WHS systems and support best-practice health and safety outcomes.

About the Role

As a Senior WHS Advisor, you will provide trusted technical advice and practical support across a broad range of work health and safety matters. You will contribute to the development, implementation and continuous improvement of WHS systems, policies, procedures and programs, while helping build safety capability and ownership across the organisation.

  • Providing expert WHS advice and leadership to managers, executives, employees and volunteers.
  • Building strong and productive relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Supporting the development, implementation and maintenance of WHS management systems and strategic work plans.
  • Developing, reviewing and implementing WHS policies, procedures, guidelines and supporting documentation.
  • Monitoring and reporting on hazards, incidents, trends and WHS performance data.
  • Providing advice and reporting to WHS committees and other governance forums.
  • Undertaking incident investigations and supporting the development of appropriate preventative and corrective actions.
  • Developing, implementing and evaluating internal WHS audit programs.
  • Supporting external audits and compliance verification activities.
  • Identifying system gaps and developing practical corrective action plans.
  • Providing technical advice on WHS legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes of practice and organisational policies.
  • Supporting risk management activities and the identification and control of workplace hazards.
  • Contributing to safety initiatives that improve organisational capability, performance and continuous improvement.
  • Monitoring WHS programs and services to ensure agreed outcomes, objectives and performance measures are achieved.
  • Preparing clear, accurate and timely WHS reports, presentations and briefing materials.
  • Supporting and mentoring other WHS professionals and contributing to a collaborative team environment.
About You
  • Strong knowledge and practical application of Work Health and Safety legislation and associated regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience providing WHS advice within a complex organisation.
  • Experience developing and maintaining WHS management systems, policies and procedures.
  • Strong understanding of risk management principles and their practical application.
  • Experience conducting or supporting workplace investigations, audits and risk assessments.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse WHS data, identify trends and prepare meaningful reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to a range of audiences.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to influence, negotiate and provide credible advice to leaders and operational teams.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • The ability to work collaboratively while also operating with a high degree of autonomy.
  • A proactive approach to identifying risks, opportunities and areas for improvement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and building positive safety cultures.

Experience applying recognised risk management frameworks and public sector WHS, safety, audit, wellbeing or injury management requirements will be highly regarded.
