NSW Treasury, Office of General Counsel, Sydney, seeks a Senior Solicitor to provide expert legal advice across commercial, procurement, policy and legislative matters. You will support the Commercial, Procurement & Banking groups, drafting contracts, policies and MOUs and coordinating with external counsel as needed.

Ideal candidates will hold admission and a current practising certificate, with strong experience in complex public sector law, governance policy, and stakeholder engagement.

• Experience providing legal advice and drafting complex legal documents.
• Experience in commercial, procurement, administrative or regulatory law.
• Sound judgement and ability to manage legal, strategic, commercial and policy risks.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice across commercial, procurement, contractual, policy and legislative matters.
• Advise the Commercial Group and Procurement Reform & Banking Group on policy initiatives, projects, and whole‑of‑government procurement arrangements; draft contracts, MOUs, and inter‑agency documents.
• Manage day‑to‑day legal requests; liaise with the Crown Solicitor’s Office and external law firms.

Your day as a Senior Solicitor

Provide expert legal advice and support across a broad range of commercial, procurement, contractual, policy and legislative matters that support Treasury operations.

You will advise the Commercial Group and Procurement Reform & Banking Group on policy initiatives, projects, transactions and whole-of-government procurement arrangements. Your work will include drafting and reviewing contracts, memoranda of understanding, policies and inter-agency documents, researching complex legal issues and delivering clear, practical and timely advice.

You will manage day-to-day legal requests, work closely with senior lawyers and Treasury stakeholders, and liaise with the Crown Solicitor’s Office and external law firms where specialist advice is required. Success in the role will require sound judgement, strong matter and time management, and the ability to consider legal, policy, practical and commercial factors under tight timeframes.

What you can bring to the role

In this integral role, we are looking for an experienced legal practitioner who can provide strategic, practical and client-focused advice in a complex public sector environment.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

• admission as a legal practitioner and a current practising certificate
• strong experience providing legal advice, contributing to legal and governance policy, and drafting complex legal documents
• experience in commercial, procurement, administrative or regulatory law, or the demonstrated ability to quickly build expertise in new areas of legal practice
• sound judgement and the ability to identify and manage legal, strategic, commercial and policy risks
• excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues clearly
• the ability to prioritise competing matters and deliver timely, accurate and practical legal services in a high-volume environment
