Job summary

Torch Professional Services is seeking a Senior Engineer to own end-to-end backend features on a greenfield project, delivering on a Kotlin/Spring Boot stack hosted in GCP. You’ll take ownership from system design through to production and collaborate closely with a small, high-trust team.

This hands-on role requires mentoring a junior developer, driving technical direction, and delivering robust APIs and data workflows. A hybrid Sydney-based setup is expected with immediate availability.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of senior software engineering experience with hands-on production systems.
• Proficiency in Kotlin or Java with Spring Boot and REST APIs.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (GCP/AWS/Azure) and CI/CD.
• Strong SQL/PostgreSQL and query optimization.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end feature delivery - system design, implementation, testing and deployment.
• Mentor a junior developer and help set technical direction.
• Build robust, performant APIs and microservices in Kotlin and Spring Boot.
• Write and optimize PostgreSQL queries (including ORM usage) and analytical queries, ideally in BigQuery.

Join a foundational engineering team building a cloud-native creative automation workflow platform from the ground up. This is a hands-on, individual contributor role for a Senior engineer who wants real ownership - from system design through to production: on a greenfield project driving company-wide transformation.

About The Role

You’ll be a core engineer across a Kotlin/Spring Boot backend and GCP-hosted infrastructure stack, working closely with the Principal Developer and a small, high-trust team. You’ll own features end-to-end, mentor a junior developer, and help set the technical direction for a platform still taking shape.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Driving technical direction and architecture decisions, and mentoring a junior developer
• Owning full feature delivery - system design, implementation, testing and deployment
• Building robust, performant APIs and microservices in Kotlin and Spring Boot
• Writing and optimising PostgreSQL queries (including ORM usage) and analytical queries, ideally in BigQuery
• Building and extending workflows for durable, long-running business processes
• Collaboration with the SRE team on Infrastructure as Code using Terraform on GCP

What You’ll Bring

• 5+ years in software engineering at a senior level, with meaningful production experience
• Strong Kotlin or Java skills with a modern JVM framework (Spring Boot), solid REST API design and service reliability fundamentals
• Working knowledge of TypeScript and React — comfortable picking up frontend work when needed
• Practical PostgreSQL experience (schema design, query optimisation, transactions, indexing) and a clear understanding of ORM trade-offs
• Hands-on exposure to GCP (or AWS/Azure) and containerised deployment workflows (Kubernetes concepts)
• Proficiency with Git branching strategies and CI/CD via GitHub Actions
