Ultratalent is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own end-to-end features across a modern, cloud-based platform. You will work hands-on on both frontend and backend, collaborating with the Engineering Lead to tackle challenging problems while shipping value quickly.

This role emphasizes pragmatism, strong API design, and the ability to operate across greenfield and established codebases in a lean, ownership-driven environment. Hybrid work is supported from Melbourne locations.

Responsibilities

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join one of Australia's fastest-growing education businesses, working on a modern platform at the centre of its next phase of growth.

This is a genuinely hands-on, full-stack role. You'll work closely with the Engineering Lead, own meaningful features end-to-end and help solve some of the harder technical challenges across both new and existing systems.

What you'll be doing:

• Building and shipping full-stack features end-to-end, roughly 50/50 front and back end
• Working across both greenfield builds and an established production codebase
• Designing and developing APIs, services, interfaces and data layers
• Building and managing cloud infrastructure through IaC
• Improving CI/CD pipelines, testing and deployment practices
• Breaking larger technical challenges into pragmatic, deployable increments
• Reviewing code and helping maintain strong engineering standards
• Making sensible build-vs-buy and speed-vs-quality trade-offs
• Working in a lean environment where engineers have genuine ownership and wear multiple hats

The core stack:

You don't need experience with every technology, but we're looking for strong capability across:

• TypeScript & React
• AWS
• Infrastructure as Code - SST or Pulumi preferred
• CI/CD & GitHub Actions
• ORMs - Prisma preferred
• Vitest or Jest
• Python for CI/CD scripting

Experience with Next.js, Supabase, Turborepo/monorepos, Go or Deno would be advantageous, but not essential.

No Go experience? That's fine. If you're a strong engineer, it can be picked up on the job.

Your AWS experience

You don't need AWS certifications.

What matters is practical experience working with core AWS services and understanding how cloud infrastructure fits together, ideally including:

IAM | VPC/Networking | ECS/Fargate | S3 | API Gateway | CloudWatch

Experience provisioning AWS environments from scratch through IaC would be particularly valuable.

• Is genuinely full stack, rather than heavily front-end focused
• Can build from scratch but is equally comfortable improving an existing codebase
• Thinks pragmatically and avoids unnecessary technical complexity
• Understands good API boundaries, security and application architecture
• Takes ownership of what you build from development through to production
• Is comfortable with on-call responsibility
• Communicates clearly, challenges ideas constructively and then commits to the agreed direction
• Enjoys the pace, ambiguity and ownership that comes with a startup/scale-up environment
