Working at Smartgroup offers more than a job. It is a dynamic workplace that matches the enthusiasm for the work you do and ambition for an exciting fast-paced career. We have all been hired for a purpose and a reason.

Every day you will be part of a team that helps support fellow Australians - many working in essential services, corporates, government, and not-for-profits - to take home more money in their pay packets.

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Engineering team and help design, build and evolve scalable software solutions that solve complex business problems. You’ll play a key role in technical design and architectural decisions, contributing hands‑on to high-quality software while helping shape engineering practices across the team.

With AI becoming an increasingly important part of modern software development, you’ll also have the opportunity to apply AI‑assisted development tools and contribute to the integration of LLM and AI‑powered capabilities into production applications.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop and maintain scalable, high-quality software solutions for complex business challenges.

Lead technical design discussions and contribute to architectural decisions for major features.

Partner with product managers and stakeholders to refine requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.

Champion engineering best practices through code reviews, test‑driven development, CI/CD and continuous improvement.

Identify and resolve technical debt, performance issues and system bottlenecks to improve reliability and maintainability.

Mentor junior engineers, sharing technical expertise and supporting effective use of AI‑assisted development tools and LLM integrations.

Skills and experience

You’ll bring:

Extensive professional software development experience , including building and maintaining large-scale applications and optimising performance.

Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS or GCP , along with microservices, event‑driven architecture, CI/CD and DevOps practices.

A strong understanding of data structures, algorithms and software design patterns , with experience working with technologies such as SQL Server and Redis.

Practical experience using AI‑assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code, plus exposure to prompt engineering, LLM APIs or AI‑powered features in production applications.

Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to contribute in an agile environment, provide constructive technical feedback and support the development of other engineers.
