Job summary

Sydney Tools in Sydney, NSW is seeking a Senior Programmer to own end-to-end features on our e-commerce platform, spanning React/TypeScript frontends, server-side apps and database architecture.

Job description

Sydney Tools is a well established Australian power tool retailer and following the rapid growth within our business we are now seeking an experiencedSenior Programmer.

About the Role

You will take complete, end to end ownership of core features on our e-commerce platform, driving development across our React/TypeScript frontends, server side applications, and underlying database architecture.

Beyond writing clean code, you will actively share in the team's DevOps responsibilities—managing server maintenance, handling deployments, and keeping our production infrastructure monitored and highly available

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain features end to end: data model, API and the apps that consume it.
• Diagnose and resolve production issues across the application, the database and the infrastructure.
• Make and document architectural decisions, and review other developers' work.
• Help operate the production environment: deployments, database maintenance, monitoring, and runtime and OS upgrades.

About You

The candidate must posses the following skills and experience:

• Several years of professional backend development in a language such as C, C++, Rust, Go, Java, C#, Erlang or Elixir.
• A solid understanding of concurrency: processes and threads, shared state, race conditions, and what happens when two things run at once.
• Strong relational database skills, including transactions, isolation levels and locking. PostgreSQL preferred.
• Comfortable on Linux and with production systems — logs, metrics, and diagnosing faults on live servers.
• Able to work across the stack, including JavaScript/TypeScript and React.
• Able to explain technical decisions clearly to other developers.

The following skills are preferred but not essential:

• Elixir/Erlang or Rust.
• Distributed systems: clustering, replication, rolling deployments.
• GraphQL, and modern frontend tooling (React, Relay, Vite).
• Cloud infrastructure: GCP, configuration management (Salt, Ansible or similar), Cloudflare.
• E-commerce experience.
