Job summary

Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel - Privacy to lead privacy, data protection and AI governance across research, clinical and operational activities. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will act as Privacy Officer and Data Protection Officer, guiding data-sharing, consent frameworks and governance for health and genomic data.

Qualifications

• Experience advising on privacy and data protection matters, ideally in health/genomic data.
• Knowledge of AI governance, data governance or emerging technology regulation.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice on privacy and health information laws, including Australian and international frameworks.
• Navigate privacy and AI governance programs, developing policies and guidance.
• Advise on legal implications of AI/ML across research, clinical and admin functions.
• Support data-sharing, consent frameworks and governance for data initiatives.
• Provide guidance on data collection, secondary use, cross-border transfers and breach response.
