Job summary

Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) in Melbourne invites applications for an Senior Legal Counsel - Privacy. You will be the lead adviser on privacy, data protection, and AI governance, reporting to the General Counsel and partnering with researchers, ethics and governance teams, and IT security to navigate complex regulatory requirements.

You will act as Privacy Officer and Data Protection Officer, guiding data-sharing and governance for health, genomic and research data while

Qualifications

• Admission to legal practice in Australia with eligibility for Victorian Practising Certificate.
• Minimum 8 years post-admission experience in private practice or in-house.
• Significant experience advising on privacy and data protection, ideally health/genomic data.
• Knowledge of AI governance, data governance or emerging tech regulation, or interest to develop.
• Outstanding stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal advice on privacy, data protection and health information laws.
• Develop privacy and AI governance policies, frameworks and guidance.
• Advise on legal implications of AI/ML across research and clinical functions.
• Support data-sharing, consent, governance for biobanking and genomics projects.
• Guide on data collection, de-identification, cross-border transfers and data breach response.
