Job summary

Atlassian is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join the AI Context team from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or remote locations. You will design, build, and operate agentic LLM harness solutions powering high-visibility AI features, collaborating with Rovo + AI and product teams.

You will lead small virtual squads, coach engineers, and help set the technical direction for LLM harness engineering, balancing rapid progress with robust quality and cost considerations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years of ML industry experience including designing, evaluating, and operating LLM-based or agentic systems.
• Strong coding skills in Kotlin and/or Python for production-quality code.
• Experience building and operating ML systems in production with reliability and cost optimization.
• Experience building datasets, evaluations, and benchmarks for large-scale systems; familiarity with SQL and cloud data.
• Strong ownership mindset and track record of delivering ambiguous technical outcomes.
• Excellent communication and ability to influence across stakeholders.
• Experience leading technical work and coaching engineers in a team or virtual squad.
• Pragmatic, iterative approach balancing quality with delivering and learning.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, ship, and operate agentic LLM harness solutions for existing and new AI features.
• Improve quality and reduce cost across production LLM systems; build evaluation capabilities; contribute to fine-tuning and model serving.
• Set long-term technical direction for LLM harness engineering; align with research and industry advances.
• Navigate complex systems and propose durable architectures with end-to-end improvements.
• Coach junior engineers and lead small virtual squads; influence cross-functional teams.
