Job summary

Atlassian seeks a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join the AI Context team, working across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and the US West Coast. You will design, build, ship, and operate agentic LLM harness solutions that power Atlassian’s AI features and context-aware experiences for users and agents.

You will set technical direction, navigate complex systems, and drive improvements end-to-end while coaching junior engineers and collaborating with product teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years of ML industry experience including designing, evaluating, and operating LLM-based or agentic systems.
• Strong coding skills in Kotlin and/or Python for production-quality code.
• Experience building and operating ML systems in production and improving system quality, reliability, and cost.
• Experience building datasets, evaluations, and benchmarks for large-scale systems; familiarity with SQL and cloud data environments.
• Ownership mindset and track record of delivering complex technical outcomes from problem to delivery.
• Strong communication and influencing skills for cross-functional collaboration and technical direction.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, ship, and operate agentic LLM harness solutions for existing and new AI features.
• Improve quality and reduce cost across production LLM systems; build robust evaluation capabilities.
• Set long-term technical direction for LLM harness engineering and drive architectural improvements end-to-end.
• Act as a thought partner to Engineering Managers and Heads of Engineering, leading small virtual squads and coaching engineers.
