Job summary

Black Sky Aerospace Pty Ltd in Crestmead, QLD is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own design and development projects for the Defence & Rocket building industry. You will require Australian citizenship and the ability to obtain an NV1 security clearance.

Responsibilities include leading engineering phases, conducting design FMEA, and cross-functional collaboration across propulsion, electrical, software, manufacturing, and quality teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or related engineering.
• Proficiency with parametric CAD (Autodesk Fusion or equivalent) and PDM/PLM for revision control and release management.
• 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering roles.
• Experience with prototype build, jigs, fixtures, tooling, and manufacturability optimization.
• Knowledge of design for manufacture and advanced manufacturing techniques.
• Experience in compliance documentation, reporting, and regulatory standards.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills; ability to work independently or cross-functionally under pressure.
• Experience within an AS9100 QMS — engineering change control (ECR/ECO), non-conformance management and configuration discipline.

Job description

Located in the Crestmead area, we are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer ready to take ownership of design and development projects that make a real impact in the Defence & Rocket building industry.

You will need to be an Australian Citizen who can obtain a Defence Security Clearance – NV1

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Lead engineering phases, ensuring on-time, high-quality project delivery

Design/process FMEA, and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with propulsion, electrical, software, manufacturing, range operations, and quality to integrate mechanical systems seamlessly.

Eliminate failure modes and support product development and re-engineering initiatives

Contribute to QMS audits

Documentation and Compliance: Maintain technical documentation and ensure designs meet safety standards, quality standards and regulatory codes.

Demonstrate a strong sense of ownership for projects and products and become a subject matter expert for stakeholders

Assist & mentor the Engineering design team

About you:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or related engineering

Proficiency with parametric CAD (Autodesk Fusion or equivalent) and PDM/PLM for revision control and release management

5 years + experience.

Experience with prototype building, jigs, fixtures, tooling, and manufacturability optimization.

Proficiency with parametric CAD (Autodesk Fusion or equivalent) and PDM/PLM for revision control and release management

Knowledge of design for manufacture and advanced manufacturing techniques

Experience in compliance documentation, reporting, and regulatory standards.

Experience within an AS9100 QMS — engineering change control (ECR/ECO), non-conformance management and configuration discipline as practice, not theory

Australian citizenship and eligibility to hold an Australian Government security clearance

Highly Desirable:

Experience in mass manufacturing

Experience with DFM/DFA/DFS principles

Interface management (ICDs) across multi-disciplinary teams

Familiarity with defence export controls (ITAR/EAR/Australian Defence Trade Controls)

Exposure to specialist domains: mechanisms and separation systems, pressure vessel or motor case design, thermal, composites, or additive manufacturing

Experience mentoring junior engineers and interns

CPEng, RPEQ or equivalent
