HSRA is progressing the Development Phase of the Sydney-Newcastle High Speed Rail project, with a focus on design development, environmental approvals, sustainability integration and preparing the project for future construction.

This is an opportunity for an experienced infrastructure sustainability professional to play a key role in shaping the sustainability outcomes of one of Australia's most significant transport infrastructure programs.

Reporting to the General Manager, Environment & Sustainability, you will act as a senior sustainability subject matter expert, working closely with project delivery teams, technical advisers, designers and major construction consortiums.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the implementation of sustainability and net zero initiatives across the High Speed Rail Development Phase.
  • Manage and coordinate sustainability inputs, deliverables and technical advice from external consultants, design teams and Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) participants.
  • Provide technical oversight and assurance for Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC/ISCA) ratings and 5-Star Green Star requirements.
  • Review sustainability assessments, technical reports and design documentation to ensure alignment with project sustainability objectives.
  • Drive carbon reduction initiatives, including embodied carbon, resource efficiency, sustainable procurement and circular economy principles.
  • Integrate sustainability requirements into project design, procurement documentation and future construction contracts.
  • Support climate risk assessments, adaptation and resilience initiatives.
  • Provide strategic sustainability advice and recommendations to senior executives and project stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships and influence engineering consultants, construction contractors and delivery partners to achieve sustainability outcomes.
  • Monitor sustainability performance, reporting and assurance activities throughout the Development Phase.
About You

We are seeking an experienced sustainability professional with a strong background in major transport infrastructure delivery, ideally across rail, metro, road or tunnelling projects.

You will ideally bring:

  • Approximately 10+ years of relevant experience, with demonstrated maturity and leadership capability.
  • Strong practical knowledge of ISC/ISCA infrastructure sustainability ratings and Green Star, including their application to major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience delivering sustainability outcomes on major transport infrastructure or complex construction programs.
  • Proven ability to manage external consultants, engineering advisers and contractor sustainability deliverables.
  • Sound understanding of infrastructure construction methodologies, design processes and project delivery.
  • Experience in carbon management, decarbonisation, embodied carbon and sustainable infrastructure practices.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills.
  • Confidence presenting technical sustainability advice to senior leadership and executive stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Relevant qualifications in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Experience gained with major infrastructure contractors, engineering consultancies or infrastructure owners will be highly regarded.

Employment Details
  • Location: North Sydney, NSW
  • Working arrangement: Hybrid, with approximately three days per week in the office for full-time contractors, subject to agreement
  • Engagement: Contract / labour hire, with employment arrangements to be confirmed
  • Remuneration: Competitive hourly rate, negotiable based on experience and approved budget
  • Commencement: December 2026 preferred; flexibility for suitable candidates with notice periods
  • Eligibility: Australian citizenship required
  • Screening: National Police Check required before commencement; existing Baseline security clearance is not required for labour-hire candidates

The project is currently funded through its Development Phase, targeting construction readiness in mid-2028. Longer-term opportunities may arise subject to future project approvals and funding.

Why Join?

This role offers the opportunity to influence sustainability outcomes from an early stage of a nationally significant infrastructure program, working alongside leading engineering and construction organisations.

You will have direct involvement in sustainability decision-making, design development, contractor engagement and the integration of sustainability requirements into future construction delivery.
