Job summary

Flight Centre Travel Group is seeking a Senior Java Engineer in Brisbane to design and scale a high‑volume travel platform. This deep backend role emphasizes reliability, performance, and end‑to‑end ownership of new capabilities—from change processing to policy integration and waitlist management.

You will build robust REST/SOAP APIs, instrument production systems with Datadog, and collaborate with product managers to translate complex travel workflows into scalable backend logic.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering with Java 11+ (Java 17/21 preferred).
• Proficient with AI coding tools (Claude, GitHub Copilot) and evaluating AI-generated code.
• Expert in Spring ecosystem: Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA, Spring Security, Spring Integration.
• Strong track record building complex REST APIs and SOAP/WSDL services, with versioning and contracts.
• Instrumenting production systems with Datadog: APM, dashboards, metrics, logs, anomaly detection.
• Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Sybase and complex query design.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and own complex backend services and APIs in Java with a focus on reliability and performance.
• Deliver new modules (change/cancellation, waitlist, policy integration) across the travel platform.
• Implement and consume REST/SOAP services interfacing with GDS, booking engines, and external platforms.
• Ensure high uptime and runbooks; monitor SLIs/SLOs and lead post-incident reviews.
• Lead architecture discussions, code reviews, and set API design and testing standards.
• Mentor junior engineers on Java, Spring, and API discipline.
• Drive DevOps practices: CI/CD, automated tests, deployment hygiene; cloud infra on Azure.
