Job summary

Bothar Boring and Tunnelling in Sydney is seeking an experienced Senior HSEQ Advisor to lead on-site safety for a major infrastructure project. You will work with project personnel, subcontractors and client representatives to ensure compliance with safety requirements, permits, and overall HSEQ delivery.

The role focuses on hands-on field leadership, coordination of permit-to-work, SWMS reviews, risk assessments and incident investigations, with a strong emphasis on building a positive safety

Qualifications

• 5+ years' experience in HSEQ/Safety roles within civil construction or major infrastructure
• Experience with principal contractor on major infrastructure projects
• Strong field presence and practical safety leadership

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day safety support to project personnel and subcontractors
• Coordinate permit-to-work and support approvals
• Oversee subcontractor onboarding and ongoing compliance
• Conduct site inspections, audits, toolbox talks, and safety walks
• Lead safety communications and pre-start toolbox talks

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior HSEQ Advisor to support the delivery of a major Sydney-based infrastructure project.

About the Role

Reporting to the Major Projects Director, this site-based role will be the dedicated HSEQ resource for the project, supporting the day-to-day delivery of project HSEQ requirements and ensuring compliance with company, client and legislative requirements.

Working closely with project personnel, subcontractors, client representatives, and site leadership, you will play a hands-on role in ensuring work is planned and executed safely, permits are in place, and project risks are effectively managed throughout delivery.

This position will suit a practical and proactive Senior HSEQ Advisor who enjoys being present in the field, building relationships with crews, and driving positive HSEQ outcomes within a live construction environment.

This is a predominantly site-based role, with regular responsibility for HSEQ documentation, permits, reporting, and compliance activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day safety support and guidance to project personnel and subcontractors
• Coordinate and manage permit-to-work requirements and support permit approvals
• Provide HSEQ oversight of subcontractor mobilisation, onboarding and ongoing compliance with project requirements
• Conduct site inspections, audits, task observations, and safety walks
• Lead and participate in toolbox talks, pre-starts, and safety communications
• Review and support implementation of SWMS, risk assessments, and project safety documentation
• Assist with incident investigations and corrective action management
• Escalate significant safety incidents, high-potential events and emerging project safety risks in accordance with project and company requirements
• Maintain safety records, permits, registers, and compliance documentation
• Liaise with client representatives on project safety matters and compliance requirements
• Support the ongoing development of a strong and proactive safety culture across the project

What We're Looking For

• Minimum 5 years' experience in a HSEQ/Safety roles within civil construction, utilities, water or major infrastructure projects, with extensive industry experience highly regarded
• Experience working for a principal contractor on major infrastructure projects
• Experience within a Tier 1 contracting environment will be highly regarded
• Demonstrated experience with workforce onboarding and subcontractor safety management
• Sydney Water project experience will be highly regarded
• Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (or higher)
• Experience working within high-risk construction environments
• Strong understanding of permit-to-work systems and operational safety requirements
• Experience supporting works involving utilities, confined spaces, lifting operations, or other high-risk construction activities
• Experience conducting site inspections, audits, toolbox talks, and incident investigations
• Strong understanding of WHS legislation and practical application within construction environments
• Ability to build effective working relationships with site teams, subcontractors, and clients
• Practical, solutions-focused approach with a strong field presence
