Job summary

Westpac Group in Australia is seeking a Senior Mainframe Engineer to join our Surfers Paradise hub on a permanent hybrid basis. You’ll work across critical mainframe systems and modern platforms, applying AI-enabled tools to accelerate delivery and solve complex problems.

You’ll mentor engineers, contribute to a connected engineering workforce, and help shape the future of technology at Australia’s oldest bank, delivering meaningful improvements for millions of customers.

Qualifications

Experience in COBOL/PLI with JCL and CICS, IMS and batch processing.
Experience supporting and enhancing applications on z/OS.
Comfort using AI tools and coding assistants in daily software engineering, including debugging and performance analysis.

Responsibilities

You’ll work across critical mainframe systems and modern technology platforms, using AI enabled tools to accelerate delivery and solve complex problems. This is more than a hands on engineering role. You’ll help build capability within a growing Gold Coast engineering hub, mentor fellow engineers and contribute to the evolution of a more connected, full spectrum engineering workforce.

What do I need?

Strong experience with COBOL and/or PLI, supported by knowledge of JCL, CICS, IMS and batch processing
Proven experience supporting and enhancing applications on z/OS platforms
Confidence using AI tools and coding assistants as part of everyday software engineering
Strong troubleshooting skills, including production support, debugging and performance analysis
Interest in working across modern technologies including Java, APIs and event driven services
