Job summary

Reserve Bank of Australia is seeking a Principal Data Scientist in Economic Research to lead research applying data science, AI and ML to central banking and policy questions. You will translate research into analytical tools and decision-support, mentor staff, and help advance the Bank’s data science capabilities across economics and policy.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated research capability in data science, economics or a related quantitative field.
• Strong technical expertise in modern data science and AI methods, including ML, NLP, large language models, and related tools.
• Experience applying quantitative methods to complex real-world problems in economics, finance, public policy, business, computational social science or related fields.
• Proven ability to produce high-quality research outputs (publications, working papers, reports, presentations).
• Ability to work across disciplines bringing economics, data science and policy together.
• Excellent communication skills to explain complex concepts to non-technical and senior audiences.
• Experience leading research initiatives, mentoring colleagues and fostering collaboration.
• Familiarity with macroeconomics, financial markets, financial stability or monetary policy is highly regarded.

Responsibilities

• Lead innovative research applying data science, AI and ML to central banking and economic policy questions.
• Collaborate with economists and policymakers to develop new approaches for analysing the economy and financial system.
• Publish and communicate high-quality research internally and externally.
• Translate research outcomes into analytical tools, models and capabilities supporting decision-making.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to data scientists, researchers and analysts.
• Help shape the Bank’s data science, AI and analytical capabilities, including platforms and methodologies.
