Job summary

CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) in Geelong seeks a Senior Animal Technician to lead high-quality animal care and senior technical support across study lifecycles. You will work with scientists, veterinarians and facility staff in a PC1–PC4 environment.

The role requires a tertiary qualification in animal science or equivalent experience, hands-on animal husbandry and the ability to train others.

Qualifications

• A tertiary qualification in animal science or related field, or equivalent relevant experience (+5 years) in animal science with demonstrated capability in research animal care.
• Experience independently performing animal husbandry, monitoring and technical procedures with small animals, including identification, injections, sampling and humane euthanasia.
• Understanding of animal ethics, legislation and regulatory requirements with disciplined record-keeping and adherence to procedures.
• Ability to provide technical leadership, training and direction to animal care, veterinary and scientific colleagues.
• Sound judgement and problem-solving skills to identify and elevate welfare, safety, quality or compliance concerns.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver animal husbandry, handling, monitoring, identification and biological sampling.
• Provide senior technical support, guidance and on-the-job training to animal technicians and facility users.
• Collaborate with scientists and veterinarians on study planning, delivery and Animal Ethics Committee applications.
• Maintain high standards of animal welfare, biosecurity, facility operations and documentation.
• Handle day-to-day operational issues and contribute to continuous improvement in animal care and facility practices.
• Participate in weekend rosters and, when required, after-hours or on-call work.
