Job summary

H2O.ai is seeking a Senior Manager, AI Engineering in Sydney to design and ship end-to-end AI solutions for APAC enterprises. This hands-on role sits within a customer-facing field team and will involve leading a team of AI engineers and data scientists to deliver production-ready AI systems.

You will work with Kaggle Grandmasters and ML experts to translate business problems into scalable AI architectures, while maintaining governance, lifecycle best practices, and strong customer engagement.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in data science, ML, AI engineering or software engineering with enterprise delivery experience.
• 2+ years leading technical teams, either direct people management or tech-lead ownership.
• Experience hiring, mentoring, giving performance feedback and developing engineers.
• Track record of running multiple concurrent enterprise engagements to time, quality and budget.
• Strong hands-on foundation in predictive ML, feature engineering, model development and evaluation.
• Experience building and deploying production AI systems including APIs, backend services or ML apps.
• Solid understanding of GenAI systems (LLMs, SLMs, RAG, prompt engineering, evaluation, agentic workflows).
• Strong Python skills and production engineering practices (testing, CI/CD, debugging, version control).
• Experience with cloud platforms and MLOps/LLMOps concepts (deployment, monitoring, governance).
• Ability to review technical implementations and coach engineers to make decisions independently.
• Strong customer-facing communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end delivery of AI/ML and GenAI solutions for enterprise customers.
• Own delivery execution across multiple concurrent AI workstreams.
• Manage, mentor and grow a team of AI engineers and data scientists.
• Staffing and capacity planning across engagements.
• Manage technical delivery risks and dependencies across teams.
• Partner with customers to translate business problems into AI solutions.
• Stay hands-on: prototype, review, debug code, and defend architecture decisions.
• Guide design and review of ML models and GenAI systems.
• Ensure best practices across the ML lifecycle: data prep, feature engineering, training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, governance.
• Raise the technical bar through design and code reviews, pairing and feedback.
• Act as the primary technical point of contact for customers and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with sales on scoping, SOWs and expansion opportunities.
• Work with product and engineering to build accelerators and reference architectures.
