Own your client portfolio including reporting, tax, payroll and advisory, while mentoring the team on a clear path to partnership.
- Take full ownership of a portfolio of small to medium-sized business clients across various industries, acting as the primary point of accountability for their financial affairs.
- Prepare and review financial statements, including profit & loss, balance sheet, and cash flow reports.
- Review reconciliations (bank, credit card, and balance sheet) prepared by junior staff, ensuring accuracy and integrity of the underlying data.
- Oversee accounts payable/receivable processes for the portfolio, resolving escalated or complex issues.
Tax, BAS & Compliance
- Review and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS), ensuring accurate GST treatment and coding.
- Prepare and review income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, and partnerships.
- Ensure compliance with relevant Australian tax legislation, ATO requirements, and accounting standards.
- Provide guidance on tax planning and structuring opportunities for clients.
Payroll & Employment Compliance Oversight
- Oversee end-to-end payroll processes, including superannuation, PAYG withholding, and Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting, ensuring compliance with Fair Work and relevant awards.
- Act as escalation point for complex payroll or employee-related queries.
- Work across and provide guidance on cloud-based accounting platforms including Xero, MYOB, and QuickBooks.
- Lead system setup, data migration, and optimisation projects for client accounting systems.
- Identify and implement opportunities to automate processes and improve efficiency through technology.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, building long-term relationships and providing strategic financial guidance beyond day-to-day bookkeeping.
- Liaise directly with clients on financial performance, compliance matters, and business advisory needs.
- Manage client expectations, communicate proactively, and resolve complex or sensitive issues.
Month-End & Year-End Support
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including reviewing reconciliations and journal entries prepared by junior staff.
- Prepare management reports and financial analysis to support client decision-making.
- Identify discrepancies, irregularities, or risk areas, and recommend corrective action or process improvements.
Team Leadership & Workflow Management
- Review and provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior accountants and bookkeepers, including reviewing their work for accuracy and compliance.
- Manage multiple client engagements and deadlines across the team, ensuring high-quality, timely delivery.
- Maintain organised, audit-ready working papers and documentation.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the accounting function, including process and systems enhancements.
What you bring:
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
- CA or CPA qualified (or very close to completion)
- Strong technical knowledge of Australian tax, BAS/GST, and payroll compliance
- Proven ability to manage a client portfolio autonomously and lead a team
- Ability to prioritise and manage multiple engagements to meet deadlines
- High level of attention to detail, initiative, and sound professional judgement
- Experience reviewing the work of junior staff and providing constructive feedback
