Job summary

TechSkill Academy is an Australian Registered Training Organisation seeking an experienced RTO Manager to own day-to-day operations, Student Services and the Trainer & Assessor networks.

You’ll lead the team, set priorities and stay close to the work, ensuring operational performance and compliance across the student lifecycle and AVETMISS reporting.

Job description

Techskill Academy is looking for an experienced RTO Manager to take day-to-day responsibility for our operations, Student Services team and Trainer & Assessor network.

We’ll be upfront: this isn’t an easy management job.

We’re a small, fast-moving, fully online RTO. There aren’t layers of managers or large support functions around you, and this isn’t a role where you’ll spend your day directing other people to do the operational work.

We need someone who is an operator as much as a manager.

You’ll lead the team, set priorities and hold people accountable, but you’ll also stay close to the work, understand what’s happening across the operation and step in when needed.

If something isn’t working, we’ll expect you to know about it, understand why and help get it sorted.

What you’ll be responsible for

• Leading the Student Services team
• Managing our internal Trainers & Assessors and external T&A network
• Student administration from enrolment through to completion
• Student progression, support and service levels
• Assessment turnaround and T&A capacity
• SMS/LMS administration, AVETMISS and regulatory reporting
• Student and T&A records
• Operational compliance, complaints and appeals
• Team performance, development and recruitment
• Workload, priorities and operational capacity
• Funding administration and reporting
• Working with other areas of the business when an operational issue needs solving

You’ll have people to lead, but you need to understand and be capable of doing the work you’re responsible for.

When things get busy, you’re willing to get involved. When something keeps going wrong, you’re expected to get beyond the immediate problem and work out what’s causing it.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who has genuinely run RTO operations, not simply worked around them.

You should bring

• Solid operational experience within an RTO, ideally a private RTO
• Strong practical knowledge of RTO administration and compliance
• Experience with Student Services and the student lifecycle
• Experience working with and managing Trainers & Assessors
• SMS/LMS and AVETMISS experience
• Previous people leadership experience
• Strong organisation and operational judgement
• The confidence to make decisions and solve problems
• The ability to prioritise when several things need attention at once
• Comfort working with data, systems and technology
• TAE40122 or equivalent would be well regarded but isn’t essential for the right person.

The person we’re looking for

You don’t need to be the loudest person in the room, and we’re not looking for someone who wants to come in and build a management empire.

We are looking for confidence. You should be able to make a call, challenge something constructively when it doesn’t make sense, tell us when there’s a genuine problem and take responsibility for your area.

Equally, you’ll understand that you’re part of a wider business. You’ll work closely with Sales & Marketing, Tech, Finance and the broader EFLR group and you’ll know when something is yours to solve and when another function owns it.

We’re looking for someone who is:

• Hands-on. You’re comfortable in the detail and don’t see operational work as being beneath a manager.
• Practical. You solve the problem in front of you without automatically creating more process around it.
• Accountable. If something sits within your area, you own getting it resolved.
• Commercial. You understand we’re running a business as well as an RTO.
• Confident. You’ll speak up, make decisions and back your judgement.
• Low ego. You don’t need to own everything to have influence, and you’re comfortable working within clear areas of responsibility.
• Comfortable with change. Our systems and ways of working will continue to evolve.
• Technology and compliance au fait. Both matter here, but neither is the whole job.

You need enough RTO knowledge to make sure the operation is compliant, records are clean and risks are identified early. We’re not looking for someone to build layers of policy or process simply because that’s how it’s always been done.

We’re also investing heavily in systems, automation and AI. Our Tech team owns and builds those solutions. Your role is to understand the operational problem, provide useful input and make sure your team adopts the tools and processes that are introduced.

And leave things working better than you found them.
