Job summary

Wodonga Council offers a four‑year Roadside Maintenance Apprentice program to start a civil construction career while contributing to the community. The role combines formal study toward a Certificate III in Civil Construction with hands‑on, supervised experience across roadside maintenance activities.

You will learn to maintain roads, drainage systems, pathways, kerb and channel, bridges and signage, while developing plant and equipment operation, traffic management and worksite safety skills

Qualifications

• Certificate III in Civil Construction completed or underway within the four‑year apprenticeship.
• Experience or exposure to roadside maintenance and civil works is desirable.
• Commitment to safety and teamwork in outdoor environments.

Responsibilities

• Learn through formal study and practical, supervised on‑the‑job training toward Certificate III in Civil Construction.
• Maintain roads, drainage, pathways, kerb and channel, bridges, guardrails and signage.
• Develop skills in plant and equipment operation, traffic management and site safety.
• Assist with routine recordkeeping and contribute to coordinated service delivery across Council areas.

Start your civil construction career while helping maintain the roads and infrastructure used by the Wodonga community every day. This four-year apprenticeship combines formal study toward a Certificate III in Civil Construction with practical, supervised experience across Council’s roadside maintenance activities.

Working alongside experienced employees, you will learn how to maintain roads, drainage systems, pathways, kerb and channel, bridges, guardrails, guideposts and signage. You will also develop skills in plant and equipment operation, traffic management, worksite safety and routine recordkeeping while contributing to a supportive and community-focused outdoor team.

Key Aspects Of The Role

• Learn through practical experience Complete formal study, workplace training and competency assessments as part of a Certificate III in Civil Construction. The apprenticeship combines hands‑on learning with structured development, providing opportunities to build practical skills, apply new knowledge and gain experience across a broad range of roadside maintenance activities.
• Maintain important community infrastructure Contribute to the planned and responsive maintenance of roads, stormwater drainage, pathways, kerb and channel, bridges, guardrails, guideposts and signage. This work supports the safety, functionality and long‑term serviceability of Council's roadside infrastructure network.
• Develop plant and equipment skills Gain experience using vehicles, plant, equipment and hand tools required for roadside maintenance activities. Responsibilities include routine cleaning and checks, reporting faults and servicing requirements, and operating equipment in line with training, authorisation and workplace procedures.
• Support safe and coordinated worksites Work within established safety requirements, work procedures and traffic management arrangements while assisting with maintenance activities across the municipality. The role also provides opportunities to support other roads, parks and outdoor operations teams, contributing to coordinated service delivery across Council's operational areas.

Prior to commencement, the successful applicant will be required to provide the following.

• A copy of a recent National Police Check (less than 3 months)
• A current driver’s licence
• Evidence of eligibility to work in Australia
• OHS White Card

The completion of a pre‑employment functional assessment (paid for by the council) will also be required.
