Job summary

Yarra City Council is seeking a skilled Civil Construction Worker/Operator to join the Road Services Unit. The role will operate heavy machinery, perform road maintenance, signage upkeep and traffic management tasks across the municipality, with a strong emphasis on safety and teamwork.

The successful candidate will work in a supportive environment, contributing to asset maintenance and climate action initiatives.

Qualifications

• Experience in civil construction, including asphalt, concrete, and bluestone works.
• Proficiency in operating heavy machinery (e.g., excavators, skid steers).
• Understanding of work schedule programming and work order processes.
• Strong understanding of safety procedures and site protocols.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• HR licence and traffic management qualifications (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Civil Construction and Road Maintenance: assist with maintenance and repair of roads, footpaths, kerbs, channels, and drainage infrastructure.
• Support concreting, asphalting, and bluestone works; operate heavy machinery for excavation, grading, levelling, material spreading, compaction and site clean-up.
• Signage and Street Furniture Maintenance: inspect and maintain street signage and furniture for safety and appearance; install, clean and repair works.
• Operational Duties: complete daily plant inspection sheets and activity logs; report asset maintenance needs and graffiti; ensure compliance with Road Management Plan; manage data entry and work schedules.

Band 4 – $72,735.60 ($39.96 per hour) + Super + Fortnightly RDO (9-day fortnight)RDO applicable for full-time 38 hours per week only)

About the Role

Yarra City Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Civil Construction Worker/Operator to join ourRoad Services Unit. This role plays a vital part in maintaining the condition and appearance of Council’s assets and infrastructure across the municipality. You will be responsible for operating heavy machinery and supporting a wide range of civil construction and road maintenance activities. The role requires a strong understanding of road maintenance procedures and a commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

Civil Construction and Road Maintenance:

• Assist with maintenance and repair of roads, footpaths, kerbs, channels, and drainage infrastructure
• Support concreting, asphalting, andbluestone works
• Operate heavy machinery for tasks including excavation, grading, levelling, material spreading, compaction, and site clean-up
• Respond to reactive maintenance requests and address safety hazards
• Maintain accurate records of work completed and equipment usage
• Assist with traffic management and site safety setups
• Ensure plant and equipment are secured at the end of each workday

Signage and Street Furniture Maintenance:

• Inspect and maintain street signage and furniture for safety and appearance
• Perform installation, cleaning, and repair works
• Identify and program areas for ongoing maintenance

Operational Duties:

• Complete daily plant inspection sheets and activity logs
• Report asset maintenance needs, street cleansing issues, or graffiti observed during duties
• Ensure compliance with Council’s Road Management Plan response timeframe
• Complete data entry and manage work schedules and job allocations.

What We’re Looking For
