Job summary

Mackay Base Hospital in Mackay, Queensland is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to join the General Surgical Unit on a six-week contract. The role offers exposure to a dynamic acute surgical environment with a rotating roster of 8 and 12-hour shifts.

The successful candidate will have at least three years' experience in acute surgical wards and perioperative care, with strong assessment, teamwork and adaptability to support other wards as required.

Responsibilities

RN - Mackay Base Hospital - General Surgical Unit (GSU)

Mackay Base Hospital is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to join the General Surgical Unit on a six-week contract role. Based in Mackay, Queensland, this position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic acute surgical environment with a rotating roster of 8 and 12-hour shifts, working a maximum of 80 hours per fortnight. The role begins on 12 October 2026 and runs through to 22 November 2026, with flexibility to support other wards as needed.

• Six-week contract in a busy acute surgical ward with exposure to perioperative care
• Rotating 8 and 12-hour shifts, maximum 80 hours per fortnight
• Based in Mackay, QLD with potential to pool across other wards for variety and flexibility

Preferred Requirements

• Minimum three years' experience working in an acute surgical ward and perioperative setting
• Strong clinical assessment and patient care skills in a surgical context
• Ability to work effectively within a rotating shift pattern and adapt to changing ward priorities
• Sound communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary surgical teams
• Flexibility to support other wards when required and contribute to broader hospital operations

Preferred Qualifications

• Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse (Grade 5)
• Familiarity with Queensland ieMR or similar electronic medical record systems
• Previous experience working within Queensland Health or Mackay Health and Hospital Service
