Job summary

Taronga Zoo in Sydney offers casual retail assistant roles at Australia’s iconic Taronga Zoo. You’ll deliver warm customer service, assist guests with purchases and zoo experiences, and help maintain an inviting store atmosphere across a busy, family-friendly environment.

Shifts are typically 4–8.5 hours, 8:30am–5:30pm, across a 7-day roster with opportunities to work evenings for special events. This is a casual, flexible role designed for those returning to work or balancing commitments.

Qualifications

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to a retail setting.

Responsibilities

• Deliver exceptional customer service to Taronga Zoo visitors and support retail sales.
• Assist with day-to-day store operations, including stock replenishment and merchandising.
• Maintain a welcoming, well-presented retail environment and operate registers.

At Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, we lead conservation efforts in the field and participate in regional and global conservation breeding programs to establish insurance populations for species threatened in the wild. We also operate two wildlife hospitals that treat and rehabilitate injured native wildlife, as well as providing best practice health care for the animals at our Zoos.

As we head into our busiest season, we're looking for enthusiastic Casual Retail Assistants to join our dynamic team.

About the Role…

• Deliver exceptional customer service, creating memorable experiences for Taronga Zoo visitors while supporting retail sales.
• Assist with day to day store operations, including stock replenishment, merchandising, store presentation, and register operations.
• Work collaboratively as part of a dynamic team to maintain a welcoming, efficient, and well presented retail environment.
• Shifts generally range between 4 and 8.5 hours, operating between 8:30am and 5:30pm.
• Support a range of special and after hours Zoo events, with flexibility to work evening shifts when required.
• 3 to 4 shifts per week available, subject to operational requirements.
• Availability across at least 4 days per week, including weekdays, weekends, public holidays, and peak trading periods.
• Available to work throughout our peak summer trading period from 21 December through to 10 January.
• Opportunity to work in a unique environment, engaging with guests and helping enhance their overall Taronga Zoo experience

• Passionate about delivering exceptional customer service and creating positive experiences for every guest.
• Confident communicating with a diverse range of visitors, including families and children.
• Friendly, approachable, and able to build positive relationships with guests and team members.
• Keen to learn about Taronga's retail products, experiences, and Zoo Friends membership program.
• Physically active and able to spend extended periods on your feet, with occasional lifting, reaching, and manual handling tasks required.
• Available to work a flexible roster across weekdays, weekends, public holidays, school holidays, and peak trading periods.
• Able to support both daytime retail operations and evening Zoo events when required.
• Hold, or be willing to obtain, a valid NSW Working with Children Check.
