Job summary

Sunshine Coast Council is seeking a capable Recovery Officer to lead coordination of the region’s disaster recovery efforts within the Disaster Management Branch. You will drive governance, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement to strengthen community resilience and readiness.

The role focuses on planning, reporting, and program coordination across a complex environment, contributing to a safer, more resilient Sunshine Coast region.

Qualifications

• Qualifications in disaster management or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Strong communication skills and ability to engage with partners and communities.
• Analytical thinker with ability to assess information, risks and provide practical responses.
• Experience supporting planning, reporting, governance or program coordination in a complex environment.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate recovery coordination activities with Local Recovery Coordinator and groups.
• Prepare and manage recovery reporting, information management and situational awareness.
• Administer disaster recovery funding, grants management and financial acquittal.
• Coordinate recovery preparedness and continuous improvement initiatives, including training and governance reviews.

About the Role

The Disaster Management Branch leads Council’s disaster management capability through planning, preparedness, operational readiness, response support, recovery integration and community resilience initiatives. Working at the forefront of Disaster Management, the branch partners with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen community resilience and ensure the Sunshine Coast is prepared to respond to and recover from disasters.

As a Recovery Officer, you will coordinate and enhance Council’s disaster recovery capability through planning, governance support, stakeholder engagement, recovery preparedness and continuous improvement initiatives. This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to recovery outcomes that make a genuine difference for communities while helping shape Council’s recovery readiness, resilience and long-term recovery capability.

Key Responsibilities

• Support recovery coordination activities, including the Local Recovery Coordinator, recovery groups and functional sub-groups.
• Coordinate recovery reporting, information management and situational awareness to support informed decision-making.
• Administer disaster recovery funding, grants management and financial acquittal processes.
• Coordinate recovery preparedness and continuous improvement initiatives, including training, exercises, lessons management and governance reviews.

About you

• You bring qualifications in disaster management or a related discipline, or equivalent experience, and have a solid understanding of disaster recovery principles, frameworks and governance arrangements.
• You are an exceptional communicator who builds strong relationships with colleagues, government agencies, community organisations and external partners. You know how to influence, engage and collaborate to achieve shared outcomes.
• You are highly analytical and solutions-focused, with the ability to assess information, identify emerging issues and risks, and develop practical, effective responses.
• You are confident using Microsoft Office and information management systems and have experience supporting planning, reporting, governance or program coordination activities in a complex environment.
