This role sits at the intersection of railway signalling, software, systems engineering, and safety critical assurance, ensuring that digital and physical rail assets operate cohesively across the network.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop system architectures, requirements, and interface definitions for rail signalling, control, and operational systems.
  • Design, implement, and test software components for signalling, control, monitoring, and automation platforms.
  • Integrate and maintain systems in operational environments
  • Contribute to safety cases, hazard analyses, and compliance with standards such as EN 50126/8/9, IEC 61508, and local rail regulatory frameworks.
  • Develop and execute test plans including unit, integration, FAT, SAT, and on track validation.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and diagnostic tools to support predictive maintenance and operational analytics.
  • Work with signalling engineers, software teams, operations, maintainers, and external suppliers to ensure system compatibility and performance.
  • Produce technical documentation including requirements, design artefacts and interface control documents.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance system reliability, automation, and lifecycle efficiency.

Ideally, you will have demonstrated 3-5 years’ experience in a similar role integrating systems within industrial settings in the rail, transport, water, oil & gas, process or energy industries. This role also requires the successful candidate to operate in an ‘on-call’ roster basis. In addition, you will also have:

  • Tertiary qualifications Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with software engineering principles, including software development lifecycles, software design principles and experience coding; experience with real time or embedded systems is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial control systems programming, including SCADA, PLCs and RTUs.
  • Experience with requirements management, modelling and interface design.
  • Familiarity with V model development and safety critical lifecycle processes.
  • Experience with lab testing, simulation tools, and field commissioning for testing and validation activities.
  • Awareness and/or direct experience with Rail Signalling Integration related to software with signalling equipment such as interlockings, axle counters and train control systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and an appreciation for data integrity essential for safety critical environments.
  • Developed written and verbal communication, confident to communicate concepts to all level of stakeholders internally and externally.
