Job summary

Egis is seeking a Principal Rail Systems Engineer to lead signalling, train control, telecommunications and systems integration in Brisbane. You will provide senior technical leadership across planning, design, integration, assurance and delivery of complex rail systems.

Ideal candidates have 12+ years in specialist rail roles, tertiary engineering qualifications, and track record in regulatory compliance and stakeholder management.

About the Role

Join us as a Principal Rail Systems Engineer within our Rail Business Unit in Brisbane. This role acts as the organisation's authoritative specialist in signalling, train control, telecommunications, control systems, and systems integration. In this opportunity, you will provide senior technical leadership across the planning, design, integration, assurance, and delivery of complex rail systems. The Principal Engineer ensures engineering excellence, leads multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring rail systems meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements throughout the asset lifecycle.

In this role, you will:

• Provide expert guidance on signalling, train control, telecommunications, SCADA, traction power interfaces, and systems integration across major rail projects.
• Lead requirements development, system architecture, interface definition, verification, validation, and configuration management.
• Oversee safety assurance activities in accordance with EN50126/8/9, CENELEC, and national rail safety legislation.
• Chair technical reviews, approve engineering deliverables, and ensure compliance with standards, codes, and organisational frameworks.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate technical and operational risks across the project lifecycle.
• Review and approve complex rail systems designs, ensuring integration across signalling, rollingstock, electrical, civil, and operational domains.
• Identify, develop, and pursue new business opportunities with both internal and external clients.
• Coach engineers, lead capability uplift initiatives, and support succession planning.
• Drive adoption of emerging technologies (ETCS, CBTC, digital train control, condition monitoring, automation).

What do we need from you

Ideally, you will have demonstrated 12 years’ experience in specialist rail systems role within the rail industry, delivering major rail infrastructure, brownfield upgrades, or digital signalling programs. In addition, you will also have:

• Tertiary qualifications in Electrical, Systems, Mechatronics or related engineering discipline
• CPENG (Ability to obtain if not currently registered)
• RPEQ (Ability to obtain if not currently registered)
• Extensive rail industry experience with strong understanding of rail operations (inclusive of maintenance and asset management), signalling, train control systems, telecommunications, and/or rail systems integration
• Demonstrated operational leadership ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and manage complex technical issues
• Deep understanding of CENELEC, EN50126/8/9, AS/NZS standards, and Rail Safety National Law
• Strong technical knowledge to lead full-function project delivery and strong commercial acumen
• Strong connection to market, recognised within industry with strong client management skills
• Strong stakeholder management skills, well-versed verbal and written communication
