Job summary

Aurizon is seeking safety-focused individuals to start their career in rail operations in Darwin as a Rail Operator (Shunter) Trainee. Based in Berrimah, you will learn to move rollingstock safely, assist with shunting, marshalling, brake testing and depot maintenance under supervision.

There is a clear pathway to becoming a qualified Locomotive Driver, with Trainee Driver roles offered to top performers from Rail and Terminal Operator teams.

Qualifications

• Current C Class Driver’s Licence required.
• Strong safety mindset with attention to detail.
• Mechanically minded with solid problem solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Learn to safely control train movements and carry out operational instructions in accordance with procedures.
• Assist with inspections, minor servicing, and fault identification on rollingstock.
• Support maintenance of locomotives, support vehicles, and other depot equipment.
• Perform brake tests, examinations and ensure compliance with rail safety standards under guidance.
• Communicate effectively with depot staff, train control, and clients via two‑way radio and face‑to‑face.
• Undertake shunting, marshalling, and general yard duties under supervision.
• Support other depot functions as required.
