Job summary

Aurizon is seeking safety-focused individuals to start their career in rail operations in Darwin as a Rail Operator (Shunter) Trainee. Based in Berrimah, you will learn to move rollingstock safely, assist with shunting, marshalling, brake testing and depot maintenance under supervision.

There is a clear pathway to becoming a qualified Locomotive Driver, with Trainee Driver roles offered to top performers from Rail and Terminal Operator teams.

Qualifications

• Current C Class Driver’s Licence required.
• Strong safety mindset with attention to detail.
• Mechanically minded with solid problem solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Learn to safely control train movements and carry out operational instructions in accordance with procedures.
• Assist with inspections, minor servicing, and fault identification on rollingstock.
• Support maintenance of locomotives, support vehicles, and other depot equipment.
• Perform brake tests, examinations and ensure compliance with rail safety standards under guidance.
• Communicate effectively with depot staff, train control, and clients via two‑way radio and face‑to‑face.
• Undertake shunting, marshalling, and general yard duties under supervision.
• Support other depot functions as required.

We’re looking for safety-focused individuals eager to start their career in rail operations by joining our Rail Operations team at Darwin as a Rail Operator (Shunter) Trainee. In this hands‑on role, you’ll learn and assist with the safe and efficient movement of rollingstock within our terminal and yard environments. This includes shunting, marshalling, brake testing, and supporting locomotive servicing and yard maintenance activities under supervision.

It’s a varied and active position that forms a critical link in our freight operations. About the role:
