Job summary

Department of Health Victoria, Melbourne, seeks a Solicitor in the Public Law and Legislation team to support primary legislation and administrative law matters across health portfolios. You will draft legal instruments, prepare ministerial correspondence and Governor in Council briefings, and advise ministers and the department on complex statutory issues.

The successful candidate will provide expert advice to the Secretary and engage with stakeholders inside and outside government,

Qualifications

• Must hold current practising certificate under the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Vic).
• Minimum 2 years post admission experience preferred.
• Experience in government/legislative processes is beneficial.
• Experience providing legal advice to government and/or statutory interpretation is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Provide high level legal advice, drafting and briefs and related documents.
• Collaborate with colleagues to deliver client‑focused legal services.
• Liaise with external stakeholders including barristers, courts, agencies and professional bodies.
• Prepare briefs and instruct counsel in County and Supreme Courts under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997.
