Job summary

AECOM’s Buildings & Places team in Melbourne seeks a technically strong Principal Structural Engineer to lead a portfolio of projects across health, education, aviation, defence and commercial sectors. You will guide design teams, review calculations and manage client relationships to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions.

You will mentor staff, coordinate resources across national teams, and contribute to business growth while ensuring compliance with Australian codes and standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering with 9+ years of experience in Australia/NZ.
• Independent specialist input across conceptual and detailed design.
• Proficiency in digital design workflows and ETABS, RAM Concept, RAPT, SpaceGASS.
• Strong planning skills and ability to balance priorities across projects.
• Collaborative work style with discipline leaders for delivery.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with stakeholders.
• Experience in resource management is advantageous.
• Good commercial awareness and decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of complex building projects across health, education, defence, transport, commercial, aviation, sports and data centres.
• Lead conceptual and detailed structural design and construction administration.
• Provide technical leadership across structural design ensuring code compliance.
• Prepare and review design calculations, specs, models and docs.
• Build client relationships and contribute to business development.
• Coordinate with clients and multidisciplinary teams to meet budgets and schedules.
• Mentor and develop team members; support technical excellence and culture.
• Plan workforce and allocate resources across national Building Structures and Civil teams.
