Job summary

Metro Trains Sydney, Australia’s private operator of driverless services on the M1 Northwest and Bankstown Line, seeks a Principal Engineer – Communications & Control Systems to lead asset strategy and technical assurance for operational technology assets.

You will provide engineering leadership across maintenance, asset planning, network expansion, and system performance while mentoring engineers and driving data-driven improvements in a safety-critical rail environment.

Qualifications

• Degree-qualified engineering professional with significant experience in Communications and Control Systems in rail or a safety-critical environment.
• Strong expertise in asset management, lifecycle engineering, and maintenance strategy.
• Experience in live OT environments with configuration management and system integration.
• Ability to translate complex engineering issues for stakeholders and lead root-cause analysis.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical ownership and asset stewardship of Communications & Control Systems and Cybersecurity Infrastructure.
• Lead asset strategy, maintenance planning, and lifecycle decisions.
• Provide technical leadership for project scoping, defect resolution, engineering change management.
• Lead system governance and approvals, including configuration and access management.
• Monitor system performance, conduct RCA, and drive data-driven improvements.
• Ensure compliance with safety, governance, and regulatory requirements.
• Develop engineering procedures and training materials to support safe operation.
• Manage technical deliverables, contractor performance, and alignment with business objectives.
• Lead technical assurance activities across OT and project environments.
• Mentor engineers and foster continuous improvement.
