Pathology Queensland is seeking a Phlebotomist to join the Sunshine Coast University Hospital Laboratory in Birtinya. The role focuses on blood collection, specimen processing and maintaining high-quality, patient-centred pathology services.

You will adhere to strict identification, labeling and processing policies, work autonomously with instruction as needed, and contribute to a collaborative team dedicated to accuracy, safety, and continuous quality improvement.

Responsibilities

• Perform general laboratory duties, including receipt of specimens and data entry into the LIS.

• Seek advice or approval from supervisory staff for changes in work practices.
• Comply with accreditation/certification requirements and assist with quality control procedures.

Job description

Pathology Queensland are excited to welcome applications for a Phlebotomist to the team at Sunshine Coast University Hospital in Birtinya! Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland and plays a critical role in the government's response to public health threats, epidemics, and civil emergencies. PQ offers laboratory services in the disciplines of anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology and genomics. PQ also provides expert analysis, scientific testing and advice to maintain and improve our public and environmental health, and to support the coronial system in Queensland.

About the role:

As a Phlebotomist, you will assist in the provision of a high quality, customer focussed pathology service by performing specimen collection and processing duties in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital Pathology Queensland Laboratory.

Your key responsibilities:

• Collection of diagnostic samples, including blood samples.
• Adhere to Pathology Queensland patient identification, labelling, collecting & processing policies at all times.
• Ability to work in a conscientious manner with minimum supervision, but after careful instruction and ability to follow written instructions.
• Ability to work co-operatively as a member of a team and provide assistance and support to supervisory staff as required.
• General laboratory duties, including the receipt of specimens and the registration of requests into the laboratory information system (basic keyboard/data entry skills) and maintenance of the work area including cleaning and restocking of consumables.
• Seek the advice or approval of supervisory staff in relation to changes in work practices.
• Comply with National Association of Testing Authorities and International Standardisation Organisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation/certification requirements including performing quality control procedures, assisting with preparation of procedure manuals and completion of relevant statistics.

Role fit:

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

• Experience in the collection of diagnostic samples from a range of patients including children and babies.
• Demonstrated experience of the correct procedures for the performance of laboratory tests including processing and setting up techniques within the Pathology department.
• Proven ability to follow instructions and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after careful instruction.
• High level interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work productively in a team environment.
• Ability to actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical behaviour.
