NOC Systems Engineer: Linux & Network Ops

Job summary

Paxus is seeking a Systems Engineer II to join our Melbourne NOC team. You will monitor and resolve alarms, support production environments, and ensure critical infrastructure meets stringent SLAs.

The role blends Linux/Unix administration with Cisco/Juniper networking and requires proactive, customer-focused problem solving. The successful candidate will handle incident triage, scripting, and routine patching while working with ServiceNow, Netcool/Nagios, and Confluence tools.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent experience.
• CCNA or RHCSA certification.
• 1–3 years of networking or systems support experience.
• Experience with LAN/WAN environments and troubleshooting.
• Experience with Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems.
• Experience with TCP/IP, DNS, NetFlow, SNMP and internet protocols.
• Experience with IP addressing and TCP/UDP ports.
• Experience with BGP and OSPF routing protocols.
• Previous experience in a Network Operations Centre.
• Experience with router and switch infrastructure.
• Experience with network monitoring and administrative tools.
• Familiarity with DDoS attacks.
• Experience with Linux command line and VIM editing.
• Experience as a System Administrator and/or Network Administrator.
• Strong problem-solving and customer service skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and support Enterprise Linux-based production systems and infrastructure.
• Diagnose Tier I/II issues on Production systems using standard Linux commands.
• Troubleshoot Linux/Unix service and run-time symptoms.
• Manage Linux file systems and analyse logs.
• Conduct routine Enterprise patching of production/non-production environments.
• Develop scripts using Python or similar tooling.
• Handle inquiries from customers via telephone, email, or ticketing system.
• Monitor alarms via Netcool/Nagios.
• Escalate issues with timely triage and escalation when needed.
• Publish information to knowledge bases (Confluence, Wiki).
• Adhere to SLA, OLA and internal processes.
• Track interactions in the ticketing system and route tickets appropriately.
• Escalate issues promptly and aim for first-contact resolution.
• Propose process improvements for efficiency.
• Maintain positive relationships with customers and colleagues.
• Communicate clearly and promptly with customers.
