Job summary

Smartways is seeking a Medical Courier Trainer to support the development and performance of owner drivers. You will deliver hands‑on training, run performance audits, and provide constructive feedback to help drivers grow, ensuring every delivery meets the Smartways safety and service standards.

You will induct drivers on the Smartways Standard, load/unload training, and regulatory compliance, while maintaining training records and collaborating with management to refine materials and outcomes.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a professional driver or in a driver training/supervisory role.
• Solid understanding of transport legislation, safety procedures and logistics best practice.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to instruct, engage and influence.
• Comfort giving frank, respectful feedback, both verbal and written.
• Ability to run audits and write clear, objective performance reports.

Responsibilities

• Induct new drivers on the Smartways Standard, safety practices, fatigue policy and procedures.
• Train drivers on loading/unloading, freight handling, documentation and Smartways devices.
• Ensure new owner drivers are fully equipped before solo routes.
• Conduct ride‑alongs, on‑road assessments and audits for drivers.
• Identify skill gaps and provide practical feedback to improve performance.
• Maintain training records and audit reports; track progress and follow up.

What you'll do

• Induct new drivers on the Smartways Standard, safe driving practices, fatigue policy, and company procedures
• Train drivers on loading/unloading, freight handling, documentation, and Smartways devices
• Make sure new owner drivers are fully equipped — parking protocols, customer engagement, delivery areas — before they're on the road solo
• Run ride‑alongs, on‑road assessments, and audits (bi‑yearly/annual for new drivers, yearly for existing drivers) covering driving behaviour, safety compliance, route planning, vehicle handling, and customer interactions
• Identify skill gaps and give drivers honest, practical feedback to build performance and confidence
• Maintain accurate training records and audit reports, tracking progress and following up on development areas
• Work with management to refine training materials and improve safety and operational outcomes
• Champion a culture of safety, professionalism, and accountability across the driver team
• Stay current on transport regulations and fatigue management laws
• Check in with hospital staff and clients during audits and training to make sure our service is hitting the mark

What you'll bring
