Job summary

Western Murray Irrigation seeks a Mechanical Officer at the Coomealla depot to perform hands-on maintenance on pump stations and pipelines, monitor systems, and plan ahead for preventive care. You will coordinate contractors for major jobs and liaise with external workshops during overhauls.

You’ll also maintain telemetry, meters, and groundwater gear across the district. Role includes after-hours standby, with a call-up system supported by an on-call allowance and overtime.

Qualifications

• 2–5 years' operations and maintenance experience with pumps and pipelines.
• Digital literacy with maintenance software, Excel/Word/Outlook, and asset monitoring systems.
• Current driver’s license without exception.
• Tickets such as White Card, Forklift, Confined Space, Working at Heights, Chemical Handling, First Aid/CPR or Traffic Management are bonus.
• Water industry or trade background is well regarded; attitude matters more than specific background.
• Fit for outdoor work, on your feet in various weather conditions.
• Team‑oriented with a practical, can‑do attitude.

Responsibilities

Job description

Western Murray Irrigation runs the supply and drainage network that keeps water moving across Buronga, Mourquong, Coomealla and Curlwaa. They need a Mechanical Officer based out of the Coomealla depot who's happy to get hands‑on keeping pump stations and pipelines running.

You'll be doing the scheduled and reactive maintenance on supply and drainage pump stations, watching the condition monitoring systems to plan ahead of problems, and coordinating contractors when jobs need more hands. When it's a major overhaul, you'll be the one liaising with the outside engineering workshops.

Beyond the pump stations, you will be assisting the team in maintaining pipelines, customer outlets, meters, telemetry, drainage and groundwater monitoring gear across the district. Buildings, vehicles, tools, and plant are to be maintained in safe working order.

There's a standby roster attached to this one. When something goes wrong after hours, you're the call. That's what the on‑call allowance and overtime are there for.

What You'll Bring:

• 2–5 years' operations and maintenance experience, with a genuine mechanical head for pumps, rotating machinery and pipelines
• Digital literacy is essential (ability to use day‑to‑day operational systems/tools such as maintenance management software, Excel/Word/Outlook, and asset monitoring systems) – or quick to get across them
• A current driver's licence — no exceptions on this one
• Tickets like White Card, Forklift, Confined Space, Working at Heights, Chemical Handling, First Aid/CPR or Traffic Management are a bonus. Don't have them yet? Willingness to get them counts for more than already holding them
• Water industry or trade background is well regarded, but if you've got the mechanical aptitude and the right attitude, that matters more
• Fit enough for outdoor work, on your feet, in the weather
• Team-oriented with a practical, “can‑do” attitude

You'll report to the Executive Manager Operations, work solo with no one reporting to you, and get a company vehicle for the commute (not for personal use)
