Job summary

Australian Portable Toilets in Pakenham, VIC, seeks an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our team. You will design new products, improve existing ones and drive projects from concept through to production at our HQ and factory.

This office-based role requires close collaboration with production, with time on the factory floor to review prototypes and manufacturing issues. Plastics experience is welcome but not essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
• Minimum five years’ experience in mechanical design or similar role, preferably in manufacturing.
• SolidWorks capability with complex parts and assemblies.
• Sound knowledge of mechanical design, materials, tolerances and manufacturing processes.
• Ability to prepare accurate BOMs and technical specifications.
• Strong problem-solving and project-management skills with a structured approach.
• Full Australian working rights.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop new products, components and manufacturing solutions from concept through to production.
• Create 3D models, assemblies and production-ready drawings using SolidWorks.
• Improve existing products for performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost.
• Perform engineering calculations, design reviews, tolerance analysis and design validation.
• Prepare and maintain bills of materials, specifications and documentation.
• Support prototyping, testing, certification and introduction of new products.
• Investigate issues and develop practical engineering solutions.
• Contribute to tooling, machinery, jigs and fixtures for manufacturing improvements.
• Collaborate with production, workshop and suppliers to meet deadlines and requirements.

Australian Portable Toilets – Pakenham VIC

Australian Portable Toilets is seeking an experienced and practical Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team at our purpose-built headquarters and manufacturing facility in Pakenham.

This is a newly created role with significant scope to influence our future products and manufacturing capability. Working closely with our Engineering and Production Manager, you will design new products, improve existing products and help take engineering projects from concept through to production.

This is an office-based role at our Pakenham headquarters and is not a work-from-home or hybrid position. You will work closely with our production team and spend time on the adjoining factory floor when required to review manufacturing issues, prototypes and product implementation.

Plastics experience would be advantageous but is not essential. We are open to engineers from machinery, automotive, fabrication, industrial equipment or other product-manufacturing backgrounds who can bring strong engineering fundamentals and a fresh perspective.

Duties and responsibilities

• Design and develop new products, components and manufacturing solutions from concept through to production.
• Create accurate 3D models, assemblies and production-ready drawings using SolidWorks.
• Improve existing products for performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost.
• Complete engineering calculations, design reviews, tolerance analysis, material selection and design validation.
• Prepare and maintain bills of materials, specifications, drawing registers and manufacturing documentation.
• Support prototyping, testing, certification and the introduction of new products into production.
• Investigate product or manufacturing issues and develop practical engineering solutions.
• Contribute to the design and implementation of tooling, machinery, jigs, fixtures and manufacturing improvements.
• Work closely with production, workshop and management teams and liaise with Australian and overseas suppliers, toolmakers and testing organisations.
• Take ownership of projects and deadlines while balancing engineering quality, manufacturing capability, cost and customer requirements.

Essential experience and qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum five years’ experience in mechanical design, product development or a comparable engineering role, preferably in manufacturing.
• Strong SolidWorks capability, including complex parts, assemblies and detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Sound knowledge of mechanical design, materials, tolerances and manufacturing processes.
• Ability to prepare accurate bills of materials, technical specifications and production-ready engineering documentation.
• Strong practical problem-solving, project management and communication skills, with a structured and methodical approach.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, solve complex engineering problems and take projects from initial concept through design, testing and production.
• Full Australian working rights.
