For over 10 years, Valenhold has been helping keep some of the world's biggest mining fleets moving. We design and supply smarter components, support systems, and services that make heavy equipment more reliable and sustainable. With a growing international presence and a global network of manufacturing and service partners, we're delivering innovative engineering solutions for some of the most demanding applications in mining.
As we continue to grow, we're looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Brisbane team, working across the development and improvement of our VALC drivetrain product range, including wheel motor and final drive systems used in large mining haul trucks.
If you're looking to tackle complex engineering challenges, take ownership of your designs and see your work progress from concept through to manufacture and operation in the field, we'd love to hear from you.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you'll be hands-on in the design, reverse engineering and development of complex mechanical components, including planetary gearboxes, gears, shafts, bearings, housings and final drive assemblies.
Working closely with our local rebuild workshop and international manufacturing partners, you'll apply sound engineering principles to develop practical solutions, improve product performance and solve technical challenges.
Develop and reverse engineer mechanical designs, taking work from initial problem through to manufacturing drawings and release
Perform engineering calculations and apply FEA to validate designs and support technical decisions
Work directly with our workshop to understand functional requirements and develop practical engineering solutions
Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners on new products and improvements
Contribute to root cause analysis, failure investigations and solve practical product and technical issues
Support design reviews, quality requirements and continuous improvement
Occasional travel to client sites and our manufacturing partners overseas
You're an experienced Mechanical Engineer with hands-on experience designing complex mechanical components and assemblies. You're confident working independently, solving technical challenges and contributing your knowledge to the team.
We're particularly interested in engineers with experience designing rotating mechanical components, drivetrain or power transmission systems, such as gearboxes, gears, shafts, bearings or similar mechanical assemblies. Your experience may come from mining, OEM, rail, industrial machinery, automotive or another heavy mechanical environment.
You'll be curious about how and why things work, comfortable challenging ideas and keen to understand what happens beyond the CAD model. You'll get out into the workshop, talk to the people building and working with the product and use that understanding to develop better engineering solutions.
You'll also bring:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
RPEQ registration, or the experience and eligibility to obtain it within 6 months
5+ years' engineering experience, with strong mechanical or product design experience
Strong 3D CAD and manufacturing drawing capability, with practical experience conducting FEA - PTC Creo experience is an advantage
Sound understanding of mechanical design principles, including loading, fatigue, material selection, fits and tolerances, and design for manufacture.
Strong practical problem-solving skills and the confidence to contribute ideas and challenge thinking
A current C Class driver's licence
