Job summary

Y Ballarat is seeking a creative Learning/Instructional Designer for a 12‑month fixed‑term contract to develop practical, accessible learning for over 110 services and programs across the organisation. Responsibilities

• Design engaging online, blended and face-to-face learning experiences.
• Translate complex policies, legislation and compliance requirements into accessible learning content.
• Develop courses, modules, presentations, facilitator guides, participant workbooks, case studies, videos and supporting resources.
• Work with subject-matter experts to identify learning needs and develop content.
• Apply adult-learning principles and contemporary instructional-design approaches.
• Create practical, scenario-based learning relevant to Y Ballarat environments.
• Support learning related to child safety, compliance, OHS, governance, risk, quality and professional practice.
• Design learning for employees across Y Learn and Swim, Y Kindergartens, Outside School Hours Care, youth programs, corporate services and emerging Y School.
• Review and improve existing learning materials for quality, consistency and accessibility.
• Support delivery and implementation of new learning programs.
• Develop assessments and other methods to evaluate learner understanding.

Learning/Instructional Designer – 12-month fixed-term contract

Help design engaging learning that strengthens workforce capability across Y Ballarat.

Y Ballarat is seeking a creative and experienced Learning Designer to develop practical, accessible and engaging learning experiences for employees and volunteers across our organisation.

This 12‑month fixed‑term position will support a diverse portfolio of more than 110 services and programs, including Y Learn and Swim, Y Kindergartens, Outside School Hours Care, youth programs, corporate services and the emerging Y School.

Reporting directly to the Executive Manager Child Safety and Organisational Compliance, the Learning Designer will translate organisational priorities, policies, compliance obligations and specialist knowledge into high‑quality learning resources that build capability and improve practice.

About the role

The Learning Designer will support the development of a consistent, organisation‑wide approach to learning and professional development.

Working with subject‑matter experts and operational leaders, you will design learning that is relevant, engaging and able to be applied across a wide range of roles and service environments.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Designing engaging online, blended and face‑to‑face learning experiences
• Translating complex policies, legislation and compliance requirements into accessible learning content
• Developing courses, modules, presentations, facilitator guides, participant workbooks, case studies, videos and supporting resources
• Working with subject‑matter experts to identify learning needs and develop accurate content
• Applying adult‑learning principles and contemporary instructional‑design approaches
• Creating practical and scenario‑based learning relevant to Y Ballarat’s operating environments
• Supporting learning relating to child safety, compliance, OHS, governance, risk, quality and professional practice
• Designing learning for employees working across Y Learn and Swim, Y Kindergartens, Outside School Hours Care, youth programs, corporate services and the emerging Y School
• Reviewing and improving existing learning materials for quality, consistency and accessibility
• Supporting the delivery and implementation of new learning programs
• Developing assessments and other methods to evaluate learner understanding
• Using feedback and learning data to assess effectiveness and improve future content
• Supporting consistent induction, refresher training and role‑specific learning pathways
• Maintaining appropriate learning records, version control and review schedules

About you

You are a creative and practical learning professional who understands how adults learn. You can take complex or technical information and turn it into clear, engaging learning that connects with employees and improves practice.

You are comfortable working with a range of subject‑matter experts and can manage multiple learning projects from initial concept through to implementation and evaluation.

To be successful, you will bring:

• A minimum Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and/or a recognised educational qualification
• Demonstrated experience designing online, blended or facilitated learning
• Strong knowledge of adult‑learning and instructional‑design principles
• Experience developing engaging learning resources for a diverse workforce
• The ability to translate complex information into clear and practical learning content
• Strong written communication, editing and visual‑presentation skills
• Experience working collaboratively with subject‑matter experts
• Strong project‑management and organisational capability
• The ability to manage competing deadlines and coordinate multiple learning projects
• An understanding of accessibility and inclusive learning design
• Confidence using digital learning, presentation and content‑development tools
• A creative, collaborative and continuous‑improvement approach.

Experience designing learning within education, early childhood, Outside School Hours Care, youth, community or human services will be highly regarded.

Experience developing learning related to child safety, compliance, occupational health and safety, risk or professional practice would also be advantageous.

Conditions of employment
