Job summary

Wollongong Sheet Metal & Engineering in Unanderra, NSW, seeks an experienced Leading Hand Boilermaker to lead a boilermaking/fabrication team on customer sites and in our workshop. You will support the Supervisor with project delivery, safety and quality, and drive continuous improvement.

The role requires 5+ years in boilermaking, strong drawing interpretation, leadership experience, and a commitment to Australian safety standards. On-site work with occasional site travel is expected.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on boilermaking experience with fabrication, assembly and welding.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• Strong knowledge of Australian safety standards and WHS legislation.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate a boilermaking team on customer sites and in workshop.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
• Inspect work for specifications, safety and quality.
• Mentor junior boilermakers and apprentices.
• Liaise with project managers and clients to manage requirements and expectations.
• Perform boilermaking duties including fabrication, assembly, erection, repairs and welding.
• Maintain records of progress, materials and safety incidents.
• Identify process improvements and propose solutions.
• Assist with quotes and estimates when required.

Job description

Wollongong Sheet Metal & Engineering is seeking an experienced Leading Hand Boilermaker to join our team in Unanderra, NSW. This is a full-time position that offers the opportunity to take on a leadership role within our operation. As Leading Hand, you will oversee a boilermaking/fabrication team, assist your Supervisor with managing projects and ensuring safety and quality standards are met. This role is pivotal in maintaining our reputation for excellence in delivering welding and fabrication services across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Supervising and coordinating a boilermaking team on customer job sites, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to schedules
• Ensuring all team members comply with workplace health and safety regulations and company/customer policies
• Inspecting work to ensure compliance with specifications, safety standards and quality requirements
• Training and mentoring junior boilermakers and apprentices to develop their skills and knowledge
• Liaising with project managers and clients to understand project requirements and manage expectations
• Performing boilermaking duties including fabrication, assembly, erection, repairs and welding
• Maintaining accurate records of work progress, materials used and safety incidents
• Identifying areas for process improvement and recommending solutions to enhance productivity
• Assist with the preparation of quotes and estimates where required

What we're looking for

• Current boilermaking qualification or equivalent trade certification recognised in Australia
• Minimum 5+ years of hands-on boilermaking experience, with demonstrated expertise in fabrication, assembly and welding
• Proven leadership experience, having supervised or mentored other tradespeople
• Strong knowledge of Australian safety standards and work health and safety legislation relevant to boilermaking
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications accurately
• Competency in using boilermaking tools and equipment, including welding equipment and measuring instruments
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse teams
• Problem-solving abilities and attention to detail in all aspects of work
• A commitment to maintaining high safety and quality standards
• Willingness to work on-site and potentially travel to client locations when required
• Desirable: post trade qualification and other related qualifications
