Job summary

Network Rail Consulting is seeking an experienced Lead Project Engineer to drive ETCS Level 2 Trackside delivery within the Digital Systems Program in Sydney. You will lead a team of engineers, manage interfaces, and advise on system integration with other subsystems and legacy signalling infrastructure.

The ideal candidate brings significant ETCS Trackside experience, strong railway signalling background, and proven ability to deliver rail projects safely, on time and within budget.

Qualifications

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Lead Project Engineer with a proven track record in the delivery of European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 (L2) Trackside subsystems. Joining our growing Sydney team, you will play a key role in supporting Transport for NSW’s transformative Digital Systems Program (DSP), helping to modernise rail operations and shape the future of the New South Wales rail network.

As a senior technical consultant, you will provide specialist engineering expertise and strategic advice across the development, integration, delivery and acceptance of ETCS Level 2 Trackside systems. Working closely with client stakeholders, suppliers and multidisciplinary delivery teams, you will help drive technical decision‑making, manage complex interfaces and ensure the successful integration of Trackside systems with other ETCS subsystems and legacy signalling infrastructure.

The successful candidate will lead a team of engineering professionals whilst acting as a trusted advisor to our client. You will oversee the development and assurance of system specifications, design approvals, interface requirements, and subsystem acceptance activities, ensuring solutions are delivered in line with operational, safety and program objectives.

Key Accountabilities:

• Lead the delivery of ETCS L2 Trackside engineering activities for the Digital Systems Program (DSP), ensuring alignment with client and business objectives.
• Own Trackside deliverables, interfaces, and engineering activities to achieve project milestones and performance targets.
• Provide technical leadership for ETCS L2 Trackside systems and ensure effective integration with TMS and other program subsystems.
• Support the project delivery team by resolving technical issues and providing specialist guidance on Trackside systems.
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards, specifications, and industry best practice.
• Lead the planning and implementation of ETCS Trackside systems to support the introduction of ETCS L2 across the Sydney Trains network.
• Provide technical expertise in the development and implementation of operational specifications, engineering processes, policies, and procedures.
• Support testing, commissioning, assurance, and entry‑into‑service activities.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with clients, suppliers, and key stakeholders to support successful project delivery.

Experience & Qualifications:

• Significant experience working with European Train Control System (ETCS) Trackside systems on complex railway signalling projects.
• Strong railway signalling engineering background, including experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience of ETCS L2 systems.
• Proven ability to successfully deliver rail infrastructure projects to time, cost, quality, and safety requirements.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across a broad range of technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Ability to accurately capture, interpret, and implement requirements and agreed changes throughout the project lifecycle.
• Knowledge of one or more of ETCS L2 sub‑systems (TMS, Onboard, ATO, FTN, DTRS) or equivalent sub‑systems.
• Working towards chartered or incorporated engineering status.
• Experience during the development and entry into service phase of new rail infrastructure.
• Experience in working in the Australian Rail Industry.
• Membership of a relevant professional body.
