Job summary

Recruitment Hive is assisting a Federal Government department to find a Lead Data Engineer in Sydney. The role focuses on data delivery, API and ETL pipelines, and SQL analytics to support critical public services.

The successful candidate will own technical data implementation, refine data delivery frameworks, and drive best practices across the team, including DevOps alignment and code reviews.

Qualifications

• Strong programming capability with Python, SAS, R or Java.
• Expert SQL skills including reverse-engineering end user SQL code.
• Ability to read data models and specifications.
• Familiar with DevOps processes and tooling.
• Experience with at least two data warehouses from MS SQL, Teradata, Snowflake, Redshift or Databricks.

Responsibilities

• Review and refine the data delivery framework to improve integration and delivery.
• Own the technical implementation of new data from analysis to delivery.
• Improve delivery principles, coding standards, and documentation; provide training.
• Develop and maintain SQL analytics and ETL code.

Our client, a Federal Government department that focuses on improving the lives of all Australians with disabilities, requires the services of aLead Data Engineer.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Review and refine the data delivery framework in order to enhance integration of new sources, performance of existing data delivery and rapid development of new subject areas;
• Own the technical implementation of new data from analysis to delivery;
• Facilitate continuous improvement measures in delivery principles, coding standards, documentation and provide training sessions to team;
• Development and maintenance of SQL analytical and ETL code;
• Development and maintenance of system documentation.

Skills and Experience Required

• High level of competency in Programming, including knowledge of supplementary programming languages such as Python, SAS, R or Java;
• Strong expertise with SQL, including experience with reverse-engineering end user SQL code;
• Ability to read and interpret data models and specifications;
• Ability to understand DevOps process and can use DevOps tools in accordance with the process;
• Ability to demonstrate knowledge of version controls and its appropriate uses;
• Demonstrated competency developing, auditing and reviewing code in 2 out of the 5 Data Warehouses listed - MS SQL / Teradata /Snowflake / Redshift / Databricks.
