Job summary

NEN Consulting is a Melbourne-based utilities and infrastructure consultancy seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer to head HV substation and grid connection design. You will be the senior technical contact for clients and network providers, leading design authority and guiding the team from concept through commissioning.

You’ll mentor graduates, manage scope and risk, and contribute to tenders and business development in a hands-on Melbourne CBD environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) or higher.
• 10+ years' HV electrical engineering experience with substantial substation design and design review.
• Experience at distribution and transmission voltages, including private/customer substations.
• Sound knowledge of Australian standards (AS 2067, AS/NZS 3000), NSP design standards and NER process.
• Experience leading and reviewing the work of other engineers.
• Full Australian working rights.
• CPEng and RPEV or RPEQ (or eligibility).
• Data centre, grid connection, Owner’s Engineer or technical due diligence experience.
• Consultancy experience, including fee proposals and client management.
• A leadership role with a direct say in practice growth.
• Major data centre and network projects from day one.
• Melbourne CBD: small, experienced team environment.

Lead Electrical Engineer - HV Substations & Grid Connections

NEN Consulting is a Melbourne-based utilities and infrastructure consultancy. We help major infrastructure projects, data centre developers and property developers de-risk their utilities engagement, from grid connections and HV substation engineering to data centre power, private and embedded networks, and public lighting design. Our engineers, consultants and designers bring over 100 years of combined industry experience, and we are small enough to stay hands-on with every client and project.

About the role

We are looking for a Lead Electrical Engineer to act as second-in-charge to our Engineering Manager and lead our HV substation and grid connection design work. You’ll be the senior technical point of contact for clients and network service providers, take design authority for substation projects across private, distribution and transmission networks, and build the capability of a growing team.

What you’ll do

• Lead the design of HV substations and connection assets from concept to commissioning - private / customer substations, distribution (11-22 kV) and transmission (66-500 kV)
• Act as design authority: review and verify designs, calculations and reports, including transformer and switchgear specifications, earthing design and SLDs
• Lead technical interface with DNSPs, TNSPs and AEMO on connection and design requirements
• Act as second-in-charge to the Engineering Manager, including resourcing, scheduling and quality assurance across projects
• Lead the technical content of tenders, fee proposals and bids, and contribute to business development
• Mentor and train graduate and mid-level engineers
• Manage project scope, budget and technical risk, and report to clients

About you

• Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) or higher
• 10+ years’ HV electrical engineering experience, with substantial substation primary design and design review
• Experience at both distribution and transmission voltages, ideally including private / customer substations
• Sound knowledge of Australian standards (AS 2067, AS/NZS 3000), NSP design standards and the National Electricity Rules connection process
• Experience leading and reviewing the work of other engineers
• Full Australian working rights
• CPEng and RPEV or RPEQ (or eligibility)
• Data centre, grid connection, Owner’s Engineer or technical due diligence experience
• Consultancy experience, including fee proposals and client management
• A leadership role with a direct say in how NEN’s HV substation and grid connections practice grows
• Major data centre and network projects from day one
