Job summary

StateCover, based in Sydney with hybrid working options, seeks a Workers Compensation Lawyer to provide strategic legal oversight of claims.

You will advise on investigations, determine liability, collect evidence, draft instructions to examiners, and manage external providers within your delegated authority.

The role requires either 2+ years in personal injury law or 5+ years in workers' compensation claims, with strong NSW legislation knowledge and top communication skills.

The Role

We're looking for a Workers Compensation Lawyer to join us and provide strategic legal oversight of claims within StateCover’s portfolio. This role ensures our claims teams have the legal guidance they need to manage cases confidently while maintaining sound legal positions and clear communication with Members.

You’ll provide advice on investigating, determining liability, and resolving claims. You’ll arrange investigations and collect evidence, draft and review letters of instructions to independent medical examiners and investigators, and prepare liability dispute and work capacity decision notices. When needed, you’ll engage with and manage external legal providers within your delegated authority.

You’ll support our existing Legal Counsel and Technical Managers in responding to internal reviews and dispute resolution applications, and, in conjunction with our external legal providers, represent StateCover and Members at PIC teleconferences and conciliation-arbitrations, and at IRC proceedings (in psychological injury ‘relevant conduct’ claims under the recent legislative amendments.)

It’s a balance of delivering hands‑on legal work while ensuring compliance with legislation, proactively communicating with Members, and providing overflow support to our Legal Counsel. You’ll contribute directly to Member satisfaction through clear communication and collaborative claims strategies.

About You

You’ll bring either a legal qualification with at least 2 years in personal injury law, or a minimum of 5 years in workers compensation case management or technical claims work. You’ll have strong knowledge of NSW workers compensation legislation and case law, with the ability to interpret and apply it strategically. Your understanding of evidence - how to gather it, apply it to claims, and present it in dispute resolution and Commission proceedings - will be essential. You’ll be an advanced communicator in writing and negotiation, able to explain complex legal positions clearly and to collaborate effectively with Members, internal teams and external legal providers.

Experience working in workers compensation law at a law firm or with a NSW workers compensation insurer would be valuable, as would familiarity with the Workers Compensation Legislation Amendment Act 2025 and Workers Compensation Legislation Amendment (Reform and Modernisation) Act 2026.
